I have a max coupler hitch and it came with a simple tension type pin to keep the trailer hitch in the receiver mount (might be using wrong words, im talking about the silver steel bar that you slide in the little hole to attach the max coupler to the truck). i want something that offers more protection from someone being able to slide that pin out and take the trailer. can i use a lock like the reese towpower tactical lock dogbone receiver knurled 5/8 or do i need something different since its a max coupler? Thanks

If I understand the question properly you could use whatever pin matches the diameter of the factory hitch pin. I remove my hitch whenever trailer is not attended to. But I am not in a situation where i leave my truck hooked to the trailer with both unattended.

yes the pin is what i am referring to. I was not sure if the pin needs to be rated a certain strength? Also does the pin just need to be narrower then the hole or do you need some sort of exact fit? how would i know what size hole i have? thanks

I have run the red handled pin that comes with the coupler and aftermarket. Good either way. As close to same diameter will keep play to a minimum play between the components and add to a quieter ride and less stress. max coupler has answered my questions before, so give them a call as well.

Any pin will work as long as it is the same diameter. I do this with my XOC off road travel trailer. What you will find is that the locking hitch pins are not tapered like your easy grip hitch pin is. That makes it a bitch if your trailer and tow vehicle are not perfectly lined up and the holes are even millimeters off. The taper of the easy grip hitch pin is forgiving and the holes will line up for me easy peasy in the backcountry so I will hitch everything up with the easy grip and then I will back it out and insert the 5/8 in. locking hitchpin then go.

There are threads about locks sizing up so if they are used, or left out, in weather try WD40 or something reasonable to keep the water from corroding the lock.
