I want to put a 2000lb pallet of flagstone in my tacomas bed, and am not sure this would be ok. The only number I can find is 1300 lbs for passengers and cargo, surely the bed capacity can't be this low can it?

That is correct. These trucks don’t have a large payload. Check the door jam, it should have the label that will tell you the max payload of the truck which includes passenger weights.

I’d put that on a trailer.

    2000lbs is a ton!

My father in law did 6 trips 50 miles hauling a ton of crushed stone. 25 miles on the interstate and 25 secondary/mtn roads. It’s a 2.7 manual!
He also has moss growing on the back of his cab!!
    I wouldn’t recommend either!

Thanks guys, just seemed wrong to me that three friends and myself in the cab could take the bed capacity down to 300 lbs.

Go for it. I put more than that in wet topsoil in the bed.....it was spread over the entire bed though.

I'd trailer that. It'll tow easy.

I've gone over payload a couple times with no bad side effects. I wouldn't recommend it though.

I had to haul some metal to school-pallet with @ 2000 lbs. of steel for my welding class. Truck was low on the springs (not maxed out) but drove fine. Not an everyday thing for sure...

I've loaded thousands of half ton trucks with dirt, stone aggregates, sometimes skids of pavers, flagstone etc. The tacomas are almost like the ford rangers, it doesn't take much before they squat with the mudflaps dragging on the ground. You could put 2000lbs in the back (~1 cubic yard of topsoil) but it will be really hard on your rear suspension and pretty dangerous. If you're not going far, probably be fine. don't do it everyday lol

FWIW, that would be overloading many 3/4 ton trucks. Most of the super cabs are in the 2200 lbs payload range. Add a 200 lb driver and any tools or other gear in the truck and you'd be over. I'd haul it in a 3/4 ton, and even most 1/2 tons. You'd be slightly over loaded. But in a Tacoma after you factor in for the driver and other gear you'd be almost double the payload.

I had 1/2 a yard of top soil in the bed and another 1/2 yard in a trailer. The truck was very low and probably more than borderline unsafe. I only had to go about 8 miles on back roads and glad I didn't need to go any further.

Trailers are a great option, but combining a heavy tongue weight with the material already in the bed definitely overloaded the truck.

Well at least you asked the question. Many people just say “send it” and wonder why suspension or axles are having issues.

Home Depot rents F-250 trucks. First hour is 20.00.

Reason 327 why I buy new trucks.

Many times I’ve had 35 cases of milk (about 1300 lbs) in the bed of my truck (stock suspension) and driven it a couple hours GENTLY and it did ok, but 2000 lbs? I would be hesitant...that’s a lot of weight.

I carried a 1 ton pallet of stone pavers, over 1 ton total with me in the truck driving. I did this twice for two separate pallet loads of pavers. Had them slide the pallet in over the axel as best they could. Stock suspension and it’s my daily driver. No issue with the suspension to date and this was over a year ago.

I drove with the weight for about 45 mins to get home, very slow and just was cautious as far as hitting bumps and stopping. I also read about the same max payload but didn’t have access to a trailer. I crossed my fingers and went with it. I figured Toyota suspension engineers had to have some safety factor for the suspension limits. It ended up being ok, but was a stressful drive both times. If you have a trailer go with the trailer, less risky. It can and has been done though; dat your own risk though.

Funny story about those trucks. Before I owned a truck I was building a retaining wall out of these big heavy square blocks from Lowes and rented their truck, bought 200 of these stones at 22lbs each. They loaded them onto their truck the suspension compressed pretty good. They asked if that was too much for the truck, I said hell if I know, it's your truck.

On my way home (in a sort of "urban" area) this woman ran out in front of me waving he arms and yelling. I thought someone was dying, I almost didn't get stopped, all I could think of was the paperwork if I ran over someone in the Lowes truck. She got to the door and tried to open it, gladly it autolocked. I started cranking down the window and she says "got a cigarette?". It was one of the crackhead hookers that frequent the area. It is probably a good thing the door autolocked cause I would have probably punched her. I yelled get out of here you cracked whore, I almost ran over you.
