I worked for AAA in the dispatch side for many years at the Costa Mesa AO office. This is kind of fraud is a common practice amongst tow companies and individual members. While Matt was being helpful ($ Not from his pockets), it doesn't negate the fact he was passing the expense onto AAA. If you notice in the recent years, the membership has been increasing and these are the reasons why. While it may look to be innocent from Matt's part, it surely isn't as it effects not only existing and potential members, it effects the employees annual bonus as well.

Auto Club doesn't make money from the emergency road side product they offer. It's their $1 marketing menu item that they use to draw in clients to purchase/use other products they offer. I watch Matt's YouTube video and it saddens me to hear that he resorted to his type of action.

Nope, there is a 7 day waiting period for new members. You can't get service on a new membership at the time of break down. The only way it could happen is due to fraud. Meaning, the tow truck company will assist the new member that day and then falsely submit the tow claim with a different date. (7+ days later). I've seen so many different scenarios and submissions from tow truck companies, that it's sometimes laughable.

No money, all went to truck...
It's certainly NOT and misunderstanding. I don't see him coming out of this with his reputation in check...

Spot on. There’s so many people jumping to his defense based off what he puts up on his curated and edited YouTube channel. He can make himself look anyway he wants. We don’t know him.

This is between him, AAA, and the court. End of the day it doesn’t effect me and I’ll keep watching his channel.

^ Agreed, I didn't want to make my original statement a negative one as I didn't want to get bashed by Matt's fanboys. I'm a fan of his channel and his content, but not a fan of his actions.

100%, he knew what he was doing as he's been in the business for many years. If you didn't know, the tow truck community is a small circle, so they all know what's going on. Especially when the tow truck company is in a small rural area. You'd be surprised by the extensive length a tow truck company will go, to deceive their customers as well as AAA for the mighty dollar. Like you and I, we figure, who cares, AAA is a big company and they wouldn't notice. Well, they do and they just did.

I've know Matt for about 3 months through watching his Youtube channel, so not on a personal character level. :D

All I can say is I don't know exactly what transpired between Matt, his customers and AAA. I wasn't there when the alleged allegations occurred and I'm not aware that the author of the news story was either. I also don't believe everything I read online. So, I'm not going to pass judgment or think less of him because of these alleged allegations.

Sometimes business decisions aren't illegal, but they can be perceived as unethical by outside parties who don't have all the facts or who have jaded perspectives. I try to think the best of people. :burp:

Damnit, I thought you knew him after speaking about his "character" and so on. Anyone can appear anyway they want on a edited and filtered, controlled media outlet of their own. I'm not saying he's a bad guy or anything, or that he's a great guy. He seems like a nice, honest guy from what I can see on his channel, but why would he want anyone to think otherwise?

There are no such thing as "alleged allegations". Allegations are alleged by nature. There is some real info in that article that was linked, which I am thinking you may not have read or read fully?

He is the owner of said business that AAA is claiming committed fraud at their expense, but I wonder if there is a possibility that other employees or operators have done things without him being aware of all of the details/info? Meh, that is pure spitball speculation with no info to support it. The one person quoted in the article did specify Matt as the person who instructed him to make false AAA claims in exchange for some building materials.

I am sure that sometimes things that appear illegal or unethical can be misunderstood or misrepresented. I just can't get to that conclusion based on the info presented from 1st hand witness' which are probably in their own legal trouble as a result. If this stays out of or goes past litigation, we may find out. I would bet that there is some effort to keep this private by Matt, though.

Here in Canada, CAA will straight up tell you to join so they can tow you that instant. Seems to work out well for them, they should tell their American counterparts.

Ha. I was reading all this like "damn I committed fraud."

I first signed up for CAA when the International I drove for work wouldn't start somewhere outside Sudbury in February after someone unplugged the block heater overnight. Joined CAA and 30 minutes later a giant wrecker was on site and had me going.

Yes. Sort of. Well, partly...It started life as a '73 VW Thing (or Type 181, or Safari). Now it rides on a custom frame (no pan), full roll cage, racing seats, harnesses, etc. It still runs a Type 1 (bug) front end, though thanks to my break-down in Utah, all the stock front end parts (spindles, brakes, steering arms) are being upgraded to larger, stronger components (Combo spindles, disc brakes, chromoly steering shafts with International Ball Joints, custom Trailing Arms). It's powered by a 2.5L Subaru engine.

As far as Matt's legal troubles go, it sounds like while what he did was wrong, it also sounds like it's fairly common-practice. My bet is this never goes to trial; it'll get settled out of court and that'll be the end of it. Though that might also be the end of Matt's contract for towing for the AAA but who knows. Some of the Tow Truck Drivers I cross-path's with at work don't speak too highly of working for AAA. Many of the drivers complain of low rates, unrealistic response times and having to deal with picky owners.

Oh, and if (/when) you ever need a tow, tip your driver

AAA roadside assistance is a membership club, classed as auto service. Not an insurance product.
