Maryland Rust Proofing Applicators?

This will be the first Winter for my truck here in ol salty Maryland, and I'm looking at rust proofing solutions (I know, way late). I like to DIY as much as I can, but considering I am without a garage ATM it may be best to find a good applicator. Wondering if it's worth it to hire a professional, or ask a friend to let me use their garage and DIY it.

Any one in here in Maryland, have you had rust proofing done by a pro?
Was it a positive experience/did they do it right?
Super pricey, or reasonable cost?

Any recommendations appreciated, fam.

 

I didn’t use them but had considered it for fluid film application. They’re in PA.
I ended up using Woolwax in my driveway just on the frame-

 

I’d just get a few cans of fluid film or something and blast away outside. Don’t really want to do it in a garage anyway. Inevitably drips on the floor and makes it slick.

Doesn’t take very long to spray what needs to be sprayed. And you’ve got time . Last year it barely snowed here in the areas surrounding DC/Baltimore. Didn’t see much brine deployment as opposed to 2018.

Thanks! All good points. I agree we had it light in terms of snow treatment recently. That said, I like to snowboard and expect to drive in the snow.

When you say "what needs to be sprayed", I assume the frame/exhaust/drivetrain/axles, but what else is necessary?

 

I spray the entire frame inside and out, especially up in the front body mount and wheel well areas. Boxed sections are a little harder and I don’t know if you’ve had the OEM frame treatment done. I haven’t kept up with the status of that on 3rd gens much. But you can spray inside any open holes, try to get all around. But 3rd gens I think come with plastic hole plugs in the boxes areas?

And yeah, the diffs/axle housings, trailer hitch, front shock towers, etc. really anything that is exposed. I have shot the front diff too on my current vehicle. I don’t really spray the skid plates but you could. And I don’t spray the exhaust. Anything on the exhaust will just burn up and smell bad. I leave most of the engine bay completely alone, save for some of the mounting bolts that mate to the inner fender threaded holes, mainly so any brine/salt doesn’t snake its way into threads, but that’s somewhat overkill.

On my Tacoma I pulled the 3/4” rubber grommets along the rocker and sprayed up in each one as best I could and then put them back in place.

 

Haha, thanks. Hasn't annoyed me too much other than it being a pain in the ass after washing. I must waste several gallons just trying to rinse off soap in that area, drying sucks too. While it may look tough, I'm generally against anything that isn't functional.

 

This guy came highly recommended from one of the guys over in the Maryland Tacoma group. He comes to your house and does it and charges $300. I haven’t done it yet so I can’t speak for it. He said he could get it cheaper if he got a few people willing to do it. But he doesn’t use fluid film he uses this.

I bet it’s a pain. Usually I’d agree but the scoop adds a nice look to the truck.

I just sprayed the frame, drivetrain, leafs and anything else that looked like metal under there. I didn’t do inside any panels. Using Woolwax, it didn’t really drip besides from one or two corners where I over sprayed a lot.

 

Gotcha, thanks. They do plug up the holes I can see in the frame. I was going to avoid the aluminum skid. I was wondering if the exhaust would be an issue so that's a good point. Great tips, very much appreciated J.

 

Thanks. Definitely does look great. IJS it would be so much cooler if it did something for performance. Good to know about Wool Wax, dripping is a concern where I live cause my storm drain goes straight to the bay with no chaser.

Nice work, thanks for the pics! Hope you're enjoying the lift! Good to know it only took a few cans. When you spray it on, does it harden at all or adhere to the surface? Or is it something that would wipe off?

Woolwax, similar to Fluid Film stays sticky and can be washed off with some effort. I won’t know how much effort until spring but hopefully it will stay on till then. Gotta do annual treatments with either one you decide to go with.

Quick Update:

I ended up using Fluid Film and applied that to all sensitive areas. Upon inspection, I was surprised to find after only 7 months of ownership on a 2020 manufactured in Texas during February this year, there are already the beginning of what would turn into rust. It's mostly on the frame welds, seems the undercoat they use flakes off in some of those spots and the menacing red color of rust is already starting to appear on the bare metal. I know that's inevitable, but I wish the factory would find a way to cover those areas better. Planned obsolescence is better for business I suppose.

So I covered all of the welds as best I could reach. Drenched the leaf springs, being careful to avoid any rubber or exhaust. Soaked the hitch. Pulled the plugs out from under the rocker panels and got all up in there too. Some spots of the frame I could not get to without getting the truck up higher, so I'll wait until a reasonable day and get it up on some ramps (don't own any currently).
