Can you? Like I said before, people are being told 2-3 year wait for one of these right now. That's probably why it's marked up so high if they actually have one of these.

Not a single one of those is a Rav4 Prime. Prime is the plug in one that's pretty rare. It's much harder to find than a Tacoma Pro where I am.

RAV 4s are nice vehicles but why is the Prime in demand, especially if there is a 2-3 year wait for one?

Is it because it's a plug in? I believe there is or was an incentive to buy electric plug in vehicles. Is that incentive worth paying the premium for a RAV 4 Prime?

It's one of the most popular vehicles the planet. It's a plugin-hybrid.

Price gouging, legally speaking, typically only applies during a state of emergency.

Edit: and to items of “necessity”. Hard to argue a brand new RAV4 is as critical as gasoline or food.

There are a lot of Tesla drivers who once drove a Prius. There will be other BEV plug ins that come along, and Prime drivers will want something different for the sake of something different. They might go for a Rivian, or a fully electric Wrangler once those are released. BEV Tacoma Pros probably aren't far away.

Electric and plug-in hybrids are what the consumer wants now. This isn't a Prius to Tesla situation, or a niche market like it was 10+ years ago. This is what the auto industry is. Yes more options will come along, but it doesn't change the fact that the Rav4 is, and has been, one of the most popular cars on the planet.

I think it's basically one of the first mainstream CUVs that's a plug in hybrid (Mitsubishi had one but that's not a a huge brand in USA) which has something like 40 miles of range on EV. Basically for a family you'd be using EV only most of the time and still has the backup gas engine for when going longer trips. Has 300 hp, awd and it's a Rav4. Many customers don't want pure EV just yet so I can see why this Rav plug in is a huge success.

If for $80k It came with solar panels and storage battery for overnight charging, it might be a good deal. Installed of course

The RAV 4 pug in is a huge success because people latch on to trends, which is fine... it's their money.

The RAV 4 prime is probably the best option in this segment. I think a $25,000 Jeep Compass could get you to Starbucks, Whole foods, and L.A. Fitness the same way a $80,000 RAV 4 Prime can. With the exception of being able to park in the EV charging space once you get there.

It’s up to the State to determine that. I’m pretty sure a $30k market adjustment after a disaster was declared and still ongoing would most likely be price gouging. Especially if you have dealers within the state that aren’t charging that much. I would consider a vehicle a necessity over luxury but that would be the States decision.

My buddy just got a Prime this year. He put 10k miles on it and filled the tank 8 times. But he payed closer to MSRP for it.

    1) Show me a RAV4 market adjustment of $30K in an area where there is currently a state-declared emergency.

    2) A ton of states don’t have price gouging laws at all. The ones that do, the vast, vast majority require a state of emergency as declared by the governor. They also apply to a very narrow list of goods. I don’t see automobiles on any of them.https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.pa...g/accounting/price-gouging-laws-by-state/amp/

    3) If only one particular brand of toilet paper had its price ratcheted up but all the other brands at the store were near normal price, would that even be price gouging? Help me understand why the price of one specific vehicle model being sky high keeps you from buying any other vehicle on the lot. I don’t think the purchase of a new vehicle during a state of emergency is a necessity, but even if we say that it is, is the purchase of a RAV4 Prime a necessity? No, it’s not.

    4) I believe there’s a still a national state of emergency in effect for COVID but I’m not aware of any federal price-gouging laws other than some that have been proposed but never signed into law.

Conclusion: price gouging is a phrase people like to throw out there when prices for stuff they want get jacked up but the term is regularly misused and abused. If you don’t like a market adjustment on a RAV4 or a TRD Pro or whatever, just don’t buy it. Tons of other vehicles out there.

If I had to choose between the RAV4 and the new Forester Wilderness I'd go with the Subaru.

    I can't see over the hood of the RAV4... ( ha! )

New Forester Wilderness looks really nice. I saw a blue one they always advertise in my parking lot the other day and really liked it. My buddy gave me shit for liking it, though he just bought a new WRX but "that's different."
