I’m shopping around for a ‘23 TRD OR and can’t seem to get a question answered about the infotainment system.

I don’t want the Premium Audio/Navigation, but will the map still be displayed via my phone through Apple Car Play?

    Thanks!

If the vehicle has Apple Car Play, that's what I'd expect.

Yeah my 21 or without premium does but it has to be plugged in to the USB port for the maps to show.

Thank you for the replies. I was hoping to have some sort of map displayed on the instrument panel.

My point was, I don’t plan to get factory nav. I was asking if the map showed on the factory display without the premium audio/nav.

Yes. I have Apple maps and direction showing up on my screen via Apple Play and my iPhone. However, I have a minimal data plan on my phone; so I took ATT up on the in-truck hot spot data plan which was offered free for 3 months when I got my 2023. That plan is about to expire. I have no idea what ATT would charge to keep it running. I expect (if I don't subscribe to this ATT plan) that I will quit using my phone map as I drive. Honestly, I made a living my whole life doing systems work and project management . . . but I have no idea how all this shit works. Somehow I got the map showing up and it works okay; but it isn't worth paying a dime more to me.

I hear what you’re saying. I somehow lucked into the unlimited data plan (which we all know isn’t really “unlimited”) with AT&T. This is why I can’t see paying for the factory nav that will be more costly to update than my phone when the time comes…

    I’m so confused.

The map will not display but turn by turn directions will play through the audio?

One sales rep told me the map will show and that was also mentioned above if I connect with a cable…

I think one or two people here misunderstood your question which led to your confusion. Let me put it to you this way because I understand what you’re asking…

I have a 2021 SR5. I do not have the navigation package from Toyota. Never have.

I do have apple car play, which your truck will have. If you have an iPhone, you just have to plug it in with a USB cord (same as if you’re charging it) and your phone screen shows up on your “radio”. So you just use Apple Maps. No need for the Toyota navigation package.

    Short answer…yes.

Just ask if the truck has apple car play before you buy it. If you’re buying one from a dealership lot, you can always get in it and plug your phone in during the test drive to make sure it works.

I’m buying a new one so it will have Car Play…

Thank you. None of the sales literature shows the map on the screen without the premium audio (which is a standalone nav if I am not mistaken).

I bet they do that so people think they have to buy the navigation package.

The “gentleman” who sold me my truck didn’t even know it had apple car play. I found out on the drive home from the dealership when I plugged my phone in to charge it. Best surprise I’ve had in years haha.

    ^ This.

FWIW I added this Car Play wireless adapter so that I can keep my phone in my pocket. Connects right away and displays Apple Car Play as if it was already built in. You can manage all of your apps (music, maps, Pandora, etc.) from the stereo's screen.

Nice! I have a similar Car Play adapter in my 2022 SR5. Works well and it's so nice to keep my phone in my pocket, bag, etc. and have Car Play connect.

Our 2023 Corolla has wireless Car Play standard and I haven't noticed much difference between the Corolla and Tacoma. When using the Car Play adapter in the Tacoma, there is a boot screen that shows up on the head unit display, but doesn't seem to affect load times very much.

Maps on the radio screen, no premium audio or factory navigation. :DIMG_20200824_162932.jpg

I usually use Apple Maps or Waze, but I just realized I’ve never tried Google Maps in the Taco. Have to give it a go one of these days!

Wife’s 2023 Venza has wireless Apple Car Play too. I think the wireless Car Play adapter in the Taco fires up just about as fast, maybe faster. Will have to have a contest one day. ;)

I usually use Waze when commuting, but the Satellite View is fun in Google Maps.
