Help! I changed out my map lights to LED's but when I tried to replace the dome light I had to reverse it due to the the polarity (as with some leds). It turned on when it made contact but then suddenly it shorted out my vanity and map lights. I checked the fuse (7.5) that controlled the dome light and it was ok so I checked all the other fuses and they were also fine. What could have gone wrong? Anyone have any ideas on what fuse controls all of these lights? Hope I didn't short out a circuit. If so, where would that be and how do I fix it?

Sorry I don’t have an answer for you but the obvious is to put in a new fuse anyway and pull out all leds and put old bulbs back in. I really just wanted to give your post a bump.

Edit. Now that I think about it do these run through the dimmer switch? Are your dash lights out too?

I had an issue when I attempted to change out the dome light to an LED. It apparently shorted against the dome fixture frame. It blew the fuse. Replacing the fuse allowed the lights to come on but not function properly. Turned out the dome frame was fired and needed replacing. The dealership fixed it under warranty. So, I'd suggest you change out the fuse even if it looks good and if still an issue take it in and see if they will fix it for you.

This might sound stupid but double check your fuses. Something similar happened to me, I checked the fuses and nothing. A friend of mine did too and he found a blown fuse. I know you checked them but sometimes, some aren’t as obviously blown as others.

The dash lights are working just fine. I had changed the map lights one day and it worked fine as well. I then tried replacing the dome light when the led came in the mail, that's when the vanity (with regular bulbs) and the map lights went out. While they were out I went ahead and replaced the vanities to LEDs but of course since I have no lights I can't see if they work. Does the dome fuse control all these lights? I did replace the 7.5 fuse with another one but I'm thinking it may be a relay under the hood??

no relay but there is a controller of sorts near the fuse box. When I had mine worked on by Toyota, initially they thought the issue was this controller but as I said earlier it was the dome assembly. Google around, this is a common problem when the dome unit get's shorted as when installing a bulb with it active (on).

Fixed, I checked the fuse several times and it looked fine but then I put a multi meter to confirm and the fuse was indeed bad though it didn't look like it. It also helped to orientate the cover to choose the right fuse. I know, I'm a dumbass. :smack:Thanks for the help guys.

I ran into the exact same thing. You’ll need to replace your overhead console assemby. It shorted out when you put the bulb in backwards.

Nothing specific, I meant the basics of understanding them. Maybe eventually I’ll really look into it. And I know who to call when I do need a schematic

You got lucky the fuse blew and not the console.

So the question is, is there a problem running LED bulbs in these assemblies or is the problem shorting out the dome during install?

    See my build page!
Similar thing happened to me with the vanity lights. I checked the fuses and all were "good". When the dealer had it in they said they replaced the dome light fuse and all was good to go. You can also disconnect the battery and try and "reset" the light controller.

Shorting during install. I found there are several sizes of bulbs that are listed as fitting 3rd gens, but when you look at the specs, some are a tiny bit longer than others and difficult to insert. Not enough difference in length to see with the naked eye, but will show different on calipers. If you're trying to insert the longer ones, it's easy to have to rub the side of the fixture causing a short and burn out the fuse, fixture or both. That's what happened to mine and luckily the dealer covered it under warranty. I think unconnecting the battery is a good safety measure no matter what bulb you're putting in and then make sure it's in cleanly before reconnecting the battery.

Blew a fuse during install. Of note was it was the low profile 7.5amp fuse inside the car (by hood latch), not the 10 amp in the engine bay
