Hey I am just curious which transmission is the most realiable. I am a manual fan but auto has perks as well. I have heard for years that manual was most realiable. I am not sure anyone got a tacoma with a good amount of miles that is auto? Let me know I do not want auto not to be completely off the table when I get this new truck. Can I get a easy 200k miles on a auto? I already know I can on a manual by previous experience. Thanks in advance.

Debated many many times. Modern auto's are fantastic. 200k easy.
Manuals are great, as well. And will go many hundreds of thousands ofmiles.

This just depends on your preference of drive feel and needs.

Autos can go 200k easy but you probably want to change the ATF at appropriate intervals to ensure the longest life. Though i have had Autos with very questionable service history go above 200k

I had a 93 toyota many years ago. I got over 400k miles on original engine and transmission. The truck was a 5 speed manual. I was very rough on the truck as it was my first truck. I just wonder if you can do that on an auto? Of course I'm older I will take better care of which ever one I get now.

The biggest issues i have found with my manual is with the new 3.5L, there isnt enough torque down low, so if your towing or offroading you have to roast a bit of clutch - unless you are in a situation you can use 4L. In my situation, I probably should have gone with a automatic as i will probably burn up this clutch earlier than i would like - but i just enjoy driving a manual so much more.

From experience, i dont think asking 200K out of a well maintained auto transmission is out of the question - unfortunately this trans seems to be too new to really know how long it will last before a rebuild.

Many people will debate this but the facts speak for themselves.

Manual transmission Toyota trucks resell for more across all years and models. I'm not talking about kbb or nada book values, actual sales online ie, autotrader, ebay, etc.

As for reliability, both will probably last as long as you have your truck.

Not in my experience. Every time I've shopped over the years, and I've noticed manual Taco's sit longer and priced lower than the auto counterparts. Of course, this is anecdotal, so take that for what it's worth. I'd say maybe among enthusiasts, there may be more demand for manuals, but for the 99% of others, i.e. general public, auto is still king.

Many Tacomas, 4Runners, Landcruisers, etc. autos have gone 500k+. Keep up on maintenance, and it'll treat you right.

AT’s today are pretty much bullet proof. Won’t be too many more years before the MT’s are mostly all gone. Nothing you can do with an MT that you can’t do with the AT.

All the MT “Bro’s” will jump on this, but they are mostly mistaken and just like the shifting and clutching.

The auto “Bro’s” will say the auto is the same as our manuals, but truth be told I and many others would much rather pick my own shift points manually (not in auto-shift mode) just as one example. Test drive both, get what you want and either way it will last you as long as you take care of it. Much better driver/truck experience plus not only can you get more in tune with your truck but you ultimately have more control. I prefer manual, but other people are different. There is an extremely strong manual following on this site.

Oh, and by the way I think that Toyota is gonna keep the manual for the unforeseen future, but we will still have to see. Why not be outside the norm and get a manual. You will be much happier if you like driving with a clutch in the end.

Had plenty of manuals, now a days when it comes time to sell it you get the same story...hard to sell no knows how to drive one. Nice to have an auto no more having to rock forward to get reverse.

The ironic thing is there are so many automatic transmissions out there that shift like absolute crap (GM 8 speed for example) that you'd think they could perfect them by now. They want to do away with manuals so they can shove these shift happy crappy transmissions on us and we will LIKE IT!

You have got to be kidding with this. Did you see the thread where the dude had to have his motor pulled at 500 miles. Shit happens to new trucks all the time.

Especially to Pro’s :). Do your research before making crazy talk. Don’t be mad because you overpaid for the same truck as me, but with a scoop and leather. Oh and the extreme 1” lift in the front.

You can call us fanboys, but we can still drive our trucks which requires two feet! Lol!!!

They only say that so they can justify their lowball offer. Modern day manuals are easy as hell to drive compared to 20 years ago.

Both will last a long time, one is much more fun to drive.

#1 complaint with this truck has been the AT.

Believe it or not, you can use the manual as leverage due to the fact that they are technically so rare especially in the OR configuration. When I sold my 2nd gen I asked for more just because it was a manual and I got every penny I asked for. Manuals are a good choice if you like them. If not, then you can just get an auto and be happy with that I guess. Not for me though.

Thanks for sharing. But I wonder how many autos have failed in short term? I'm trying to look at big picture. I bet you have manuals and autos fail at early stage due to mass production. I hope I do not have these problems. I like going through the gears and working the rpm on manual. However I have fantasized about eating a sandwich and smoking a cigar while offloading lol. I would have to sacrifice at least the sandwich with a manual but that's little sacrifice. I get bored to quick I wish I could have both worlds.

Don't know the answer, but I seriously enjoy driving my Sport DCSB MT truck everyday.
Also the Sport MT gets the bigger rear-end like the OR & the Bro...
Also the MT has 4.30 vs 3.80
AND I easily get 22 to 24 mpg in summer
ALSO, people bitch about the AT shifting gears constantly - row your own

Never drove the AT, so I vote MT - great truck
