is there anything more to it than the button on the clutch pedal bracket?

Other than the clutch start cancel switch no, there is no neutral saftey switch on the transmission at all... I found this rather odd.
What problem are you having? I have as well as others, wiring diagrams that can be uploaded if you are experiencing start/crank issues.

Not on the transmission, under the dashboard on the pedal bracket there is a button the pedal pushes down when you step on the clutch.

Put key in ignition, step on clutch, turn key, nothing happens, let off clutch step on it again, truck starts.

I had this same exact problem a couple days ago (2002 3.4 manual). You are correct there is a button that gets pressed in when you push on the clutch; that is the safety switch. I didn't have the time or patience to try and find the part online, order it, and install it. I ended up just using electric tape and taped a random screw to the back of the clutch pedal so the button would get pushed in more. It fixed the problem instantly.

I hear you. 16 years just wore out the contact point and you have pushed it past to another point.

Try pushing the clutch start cancel switch on the dash. Then make sure your clutch pedal is adjusted properly.

the switch in the dash is magnetic, once tripped it holds “ON” until power is released, usually from key off.
there is a switch in the clutch pedal rest under the dash that can fail, there is a second switch next to it that is for cruise control release. make sure you get the correct switch

    84520-24010 for clutch start

84340-32070 for cruise release (4 part numbers for this switch)

Thank you,a straight answer. With a caution. I have no clutch start cancel but do have cruise. I’ve only got a few straight answers on TW and a bunch of ball busting.

those are looked up for my ‘97 4Runner, the parts should be the same, but there is a possibility they are different.

I don't know about these trucks, but I had to tow a Honda Civic to my place that had a no crank-no start issue. Turns out the plastic bushing that would depress the button for the cutch safety switch just crumbled into pieces due to age. I just shorted the switch connector with a paperclip and it started up fine.

Well that was easy. Remove with 14mm, 3 awls or small screwdrivers depress tabs and slide cover off, clean contacts, replace cover, reinstall. 1/2 hour total. There she is in her home.D1F7CD4A-DA3F-4EC2-83EE-927D0BE416F3.jpgB5671160-76B0-4CCF-9479-FC568036E00C.jpg3D7CA5ED-B2F0-4C54-BF54-5AFC93F448A0.jpg6620B8A8-5983-4BCA-BE4A-2EB3C7E8093E.jpg30EB7C6A-E50F-4975-98C1-00D93A3AB4BD.jpg8062A2E3-B81E-482F-AF61-28E16DCD3237.jpg
