So picked up my beautiful new 2024 TRD Off Road Orange Taco on Saturday, by Sunday afternoon, gears 2,4, and 6 were nonexistent. Toyota was super nice in picking up the truck and providing a rental. The bad news!?! The district customer service advisor said that ALL manual transmissions were manufactured with a major defect, and ALL of them produced through a certain date needed to be replaced. FML. Want to love the truck and keep forever, but super not comfortable with transmission swap. I mean how many techs at the dealership have even performed a full transmission swap. And I have no faith an engineered and produced superior replacement trans is in the near term? I'm saddened

Yeah bullshit...If this was me they would be taking it back, not repairing it if you only had it for a day.

This is the first I have heard of this. I wonder if what the district manager said is at all true or a made up smoke blower CYA story. What build dates did they give? Any clues on how an owner could check this date? Is it stamped on the transmission itself or what?

I'd rather the dealer swap the whole tranny than have someone there open it up and fix what's broken, easily.

Lucky for you they are just gonna swap it out, eventually. Toyota dealers probably pretty good about doing the swap anyways. Sorry to hear about your rotten luck though.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the extension housing for the shifter. Toyota is using mostly the same transmission from the Hilux and the previous gen Tacoma. It's the Hilux transmission, with a Tacoma length input shaft, and a new shifter extension housing to put the shifter where it needs to be in the cab in the new truck, due to the trans being mounted to a 4 cylinder.

The only part I could see them having screwed up widespread would maybe be something in the extension housing that caused you to no longer engage the rear 3 gears.

Highly doubt there is a widespread issue with the new trans that will be difficult to fix. As I said, it's mostly built from parts that came out of existing, very similar transmissions. It would be hard for them to screw it up in a bad way.

Also, I would not be concerned about the dealer installing another transmission. That is not a big deal.

it's a real reply, they showed me a bunch in california that are awaiting new transmissions. apparently california sales started earlier and has many more manuals on the road that anywhere else. no eta on the replacement transmissions. their reply was legit, they have no reason to bullshit, it actually would be a horrible fish story, they are setting themselves up for lemon law. I just want my truck back fixed.

I was thinking the same at first, that they extended the shifter and lever point, especially since the symptom felt exactly like that. the symptom was it was like it didn't quite reach those gears, 2,4,6 was like it missed going in by 1/2".

Don't wanna jump the gun, but I would bet that's the problem or at least a significant part of it. Since all 3 of those are on one side, and all feel like they miss by the same amount.

I would be extremely surprised if it was something internal like the forks or rods or synchros being problematic. Most of those parts are the exact same parts used in the 3rd gen's RC62F, which have been reliable. Hopefully they'll get it sorted soon and send you on your way.

I'm actually buying that transmission for my 3G, it's on backorder for me currently (1.5 months now) and your post had me concerned, but if that's the problem then I guess it won't affect me because I'll have to remove that housing anyways. 3Gs have no extension housing. Guess we'll see how it turns out.

Isn't this basically the same 6 speed transmission from the 3G? I though Sheldon said it was *mostly* carried over. The shift knob itself is even identical.

Kind of. It is the RC60F, but a version that hasn't been created before. It has the RC60 ratios. Same RC transmission family from the 3G. It is essentially a Hilux transmission with a longer input shaft to fit the Tacoma. The Hilux version of the RC60F has an extended shifter housing. The 2024 Tacoma RC60F also has an extended shifter housing, but a different one than the Hilux version. The 3G has the shifter installed directly on top of the opening.

Sheldon said a few things that made it kind of confusing and convoluted to figure out what they actually did until it was able to be confirmed by the specs. Most of what Sheldon said didn't really make sense.

It only takes one. For an R & R it can't be all that different than most anything built since the 60's.

In the early 2000s I bought a brand new Honda Civic EX manual. Within 100 miles, it was obvious that the transmission had synchro problems, which got steadily worse until I took it in under warranty at 500 miles and the transmission was replaced. I drove the car for another 3000 miles and it still had occasional issues with missing shifts or rough engagement. Traded it in after that.

Can you get a refund if your brand new vehicle shits the bed in such a short time?

Don't worry about it. If you want to keep the truck long term, the transmission will likely come out a few more times for clutch and throw out bearing replacement, rear main seal leaks, etc.

That stinks OP. This is why many people won’t buy a first year new-gen vehicle. Nevertheless, I bought a first year 2nd gen Tacoma back in 2005 and it was trouble free for over 100k until I traded for a full size truck. Hopefully they’ll get you fixed up properly and it’ll be nothing but smiles from there. Good luck with the truck.

If they have to swap the trans out and it is brand new then wouldn't the warranty on it get extended also as a result? Or maybe you should be asking for that as compensation. 7/72,000 like they do on Certified used?

The good news: Manual transmissions are traditionally less than 2% of the trucks built. And they've only released a few 2024's with any transmission, I've yet to see one. There can't be that many out there waiting for a new transmission so it shouldn't take too long. I had to wait almost 2 years to get my leaf springs replaced. But at least I could drive it while I waited.
