I wondering if anyone might know the problem with my Tacoma 6-speed manual trans. Currently, the transmission is not in the truck.

So the other day, I went to replace the shifter and, after doing so, put the trans into gear, spun the input shaft and had no movement on the output end, only a small clicking noise in the transmission. Is the transmission toast, or could it be something with replacing the shifter?

Easiest thing to do since the transmission is removed is to remove the shifter and try to select gears with it removed by manually moving the gates then go from there.

Why was the transmission initially removed?

The trans is from another truck, I got the trans for a manual swap. I did try to shift it into gear without the shifter in place, but it still made the same clicking noise. The trans never had the issue until I removed the shifter.

Not normal. I also collected all the parts for the manual swap and I could shift all the gears and spin the input shaft and watch the output shaft also spin

How'd the swap go for you? Lol, now I have all these manual parts, I might take the trans to a shop, but I don't know if I want to spend the money on a rebuild if that's the case.

I got basically all of the parts and then changed my mind . You looking for anything? I still have a lot of parts to sell.

a trans should theoretically be able to shift by hand on a bench or using a tool. It takes a good amount of force without having the leverage of using shifter.

or you can put a shifter on and try that.

Otherwise if it’s on the bench you may be able to use it as a core to get another one, take to a specialist, or rebuild it yourself using FSM.

If I can get the trans fixed, I might be interested in purchasing clutch lines if you have them. What made you not want to do the swap anymore?

It does shift into gear but just makes a weird clicking noise when the input shaft is spun. There is also no movement from the output shaft when spinning the input shaft only the clicking noise. Might end up taking it to a shop and see what they think.

And that's in all gears? It sounds like it's not fully engaging the gear. If you chane your mind about taking it to a shop then I'd say next step is to remove just the top shifter assembly and try to move the gear selectors that way

    What clutch lines?

if you’re putting a good hydroTOB to avoid problematic stock, that gets you a flexible SS line.

when it comes to manual swaps, folks generally opt for an SS line for that reason, being easier to position than a factory hard line.

That’s the one thing I didn’t have since I was going hydraulic TOB

Sounds good. I was looking at going with a hydroTOB system
I was looking at going with that, but I didn't know if it would be worth it. What brands do you recommend?

IDK if there's separate ones, or what folks do with Tilton
or if they had the CM before
CM might sell the line separate. I know my kit came with it.

For my manual tranny swap, I used the Tilton HRB and tried to source all other factory parts but didn't have good luck fitting the factory clutch hardline. Searching for alternatives, I found HEL Performance will make you a custom SS clutch line to any spec and have it to your door in a couple days. Super slick using them as I don't have to run any adaptors from the metric factory parts to the AN fittings of the Tilton, too...all for cheaper than the factory part. Win win win. Good luck!

Sounds good, I will definitely look into having a clutch line made and the Tilton setup. Thanks!

Late to the game here .
Wondering if there is an interlock problem . Interlocks prevent 2 gears at the same time . Its something you see on higher mileage transmissions when the shift forks have a lot of wear .
Detents could also be a problem . Detents hold the transmission in the gear you have selected
Take a picture of where the shifter fits into the transmission and post it up .
Sometimes the transmission thinks you are in 2 gears at the same time and will prevent the transmission from shifting
If its on the bench , you should be able to grab all the gears .
Spin the input shaft by hand . If the output shaft doesnt turn , your shifter is most likely not in the proper position .
There could be a reason why your transmission is stuck in neutral
Shine a flashlight down the shifter hole and use a screwdriver to move the shifter forks

Will do. I will post a photo here soon. Also going to try to shift it without the shifter and see if that helps.
    Thanks for the response
