I have been having an internal struggle about getting rid of my manual transmission. When doing any technical driving on rocks, a manual is terrible but I love to drive a stick on the road. So, I was going to see what all was required to swap to an auto and also see if anyone might be interested in swapping auto for manual.

I just completely overhauled my manual transmission(~3K miles). installed a new flywheel, new HD exedy clutch, new slave and master(aisin), braided lines and all. If I cannot find someone to swap with, I will just start sourcing parts.

Parts list I assume I will need:
    A340F Trans
    Transmission Mount
    Computer for an Auto (95-97)
interior bezel and boot for auto shifter
    ???

Any info would be much appreciated!

The biggest hurdle youll face is the wiring.
    Park neutral switch
    Shifter assembly
    Temperature sensor
Speed sensor unless you have a cable driven speedo then
    Wiring for the solenoids
Kick down cable, do you have a spot on your throttle?

I agree with you, in my 4runner I swapped in a 3.4 and a a340f trans and transfer case. And its sole purpose is wheeling and it kicks ass.

Yep, this truck is 99% used for offroading and I have driven hard trails with a manual for years now. After spending some time driving my 3rd gen offroad, I saw how nice it was being able to focus only on driving and my line, not clutching 24/7 while fighting rolling back and trying to feather the gas on hard obstacles.

It would be better for you to simply trade your truck for one with an automatic tranmission.

My truck is very very customized. I would rather just modify it. I would be hard pressed to find a trade that to me would be worth it.

So the harnesses are completely different then.... Could I modify my harness or would I need a different one out of an auto truck?

If you’re in that far, just do a 4l80 and a stand-alone controller

    Have you considered dual cases?

I did but thought that would probably be way more expensive than going to an auto. If I could actually find a dual case setup used I might consider it but I have been looking for a while and they just dont really turn up. New is stupid expensive. I also like the idea of having a Park option on my transmission. I have rear disk upgrade now and plan on fabricating a custom transfer case ebrake since leaving the truck in gear only works on flat surfaces. I dont trust it on any incline.

Back to the subject at hand, indeed. The auto swap is a great idea. More control and more torque multiplication can only help off road

I wonder if you could meet halfway. Get a manual valve body for the a340f without doing computer swaps

for a trail pig, that might be the ideal

if I were going that route, I’d get a donor truck - you’ll get nickeled and dimed on every little part of you do it piecemeal.

Why swap to an automatic ????:notsure:

A manual trans is the best set up for a dedicated off road vehicle . My old 68 M38A1 Jeep had gearing so low (123.1:1 overall low range ) it could idle in first gear by itself over steep rocky terrain . At 3k rpm I was barely moving at well under 5mph

More control, less shock loading of the drivetrain in dicey situations, more torque multiplication

And most of all, because OP wants it

Sorry to throw out another option you don’t want. But why not a crawl box? Manuals with a crawl box are sweeeeeet.

Anyway. Swap transmissions and engine ECU, add some wiring to tie it together. Might be helpful to find someone doing an auto to manual swap then you can just trade parts. Either way, manual swaps are pretty popular so you should be able to sell the parts off your truck to recovery a good portion of the cost for your swap.

Edit: Ooops I was too slow. Someone else already suggested dual cases.

Is it possible to do both auto tranny and dual transfer cases?

If going Auto I would suggest building that A340 trans with heavy duty components , a forward pattern manual valve body and 2k to 2500 stall converter . To keep trans temps under control get the largest plate cooler that'll fit and wire in a electric fan to keep air flow going thru at slow speeds

You would need these input signals as a bare minimum for the controller to shift the transmission.
    Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
    Transmission Input Speed Sensor (TISS)
    Throttle Angle Sensor
    An engine load sensor
    Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor.
    Transmission Range Pressure Sensor 1,2,3, OD, N, R, P

At the very least you would have to change how the line pressure is controlled.

    Not feasible
