I have been waiting for 3k RPMs to shift. I read that 2k is the best not 3k. Which is correct? Thanks everyone.

It’s more of a personal preference. Shift point is pretty much balancing acceleration and MPG. The lower RPM you shift at should result in better MPG but lower acceleration.

I shift by feel but it’s normally around the 3k mark.

    Depends on my mood.

I try to shift early for better MPG but I've found it's easier to shift smoothly if driven harder.

Really all by feel and preference.

Usually just by feel. I tend to shift at or below 3k, I generally don't rev it out too much. Unless i get a flashback to being 17 and think the taco is a race car.

And it's different by gear. First gear is low rev, 2nd gear I tend to push higher. I love second gear.

I had a 4cyl 5speed for almost 9 years. All shifts at or under 2k, unless hopping on highway ramp and I really need to accelerate. I averaged 23-25mpg with a mix of highway and city. Important to keep it 65mph or under on highway if you want those numbers though.

It really depends on the NEED. If driving for best fuel mileage right around 2K is a good place to shift. But road conditions, how heavy you're loaded, etc., might mean you need to delay shifting. Or even shift at lower rpm's even skipping gears if they aren't needed. Such as accelerating while going down hills. I wouldn't wait for 3K except for rare cases. But as others have said, I don't watch the tach, it is all by feel. It is just that it works out to about 2K most of the time.

    I agree, 3k isn't necessary...unless it's necessary.

Normal driving it's not, so my advice is to keep it under 2k to maximize gas mileage.

That being said, you're not gonna hurt anything by revving higher, these engines don't mind.

its all situation dependent, but in my 4cyl 5 spd i usually shift at or below 2k rpms. this is with my truck mostly empty and just my camper shell on.

Agree, 2-ish. Let'r'eat occasionally getting up to speed on an on-ramp etc. It's actually healthy to wing it up a little once in a while. Keeps the carbon deposits at bay.

I usually shift around 22-2300 cruising around town I think. I mostly just go by feel. Merging on the highway etc requires romping it a little harder of course :burnrubber:

There's mixed opinions on the Italian Tune Up. There's a really good video HERE that offers pretty strong evidence that "a red line a day keeps the carbon at bay" is, generally speaking, a myth.

My first two cars were a 65 Mustang with a 3 speed and a 77 280z with a 4 speed. I could shift both of those without the clutch at just the right RPM/Speed point. I haven't tried it on my Tacoma...
