So I am in the process of changing out my wheel bearing and I am not sure what to do next. I got the socket to get the nut off but decided to stop and get some opinions before I start ripping this thing apart. I feel like these bronze nuts need to be removed somehow? obviously the seal needs to come out...just looking for some opinions from someone who has done this before.

Those are brass bushings and they don't need to come out. And actually be super careful with them cause if you damage one of the inner ones, right now, the only option to replace is buying a complete new hub that seems to only be available from Toyota and they're $150+ each. ORS normally has the brass bushings, but they only have outers right now and the inners have been back order for a good long while now....

See attached FSM pages. You'll need a very big press to get the bearings out.

That is very helpful sir thank you! I have a 20 ton press. I am now wondering how anyone accomplishes this without those special tools.

I think mine took 21-22 tons on a 40 ton press. Maybe you'll get lucky with the 20 ton.

The more I look at it, really doesn't seem to bad. So if this metal flange is part of the outer seal (I assume it is) then I can just rip it out.
    upload_2017-4-18_17-25-53.jpg

Then pull the snap ring out and press everything out if i am reading all of this correctly

That is where you press out the hub. You don't need the SST if you have proper press tools. Be careful as the bearing exploded while pressing out the hub (hub was seized to the inner race). Make sure your feet are clear.

So I don't need to remove the hub from the spindle before I press out the bearing? Also am i correct in assuming that metal flange is part of the outer bushing in my previous post?

Also what kind of special press tools did you use?

You'll press the hub out first. Then, if I remember correctly, there is another snap ring that you'll remove and then press out the bearing. I don't remember what tools we used for the press (7-8 years ago is the last time I did this). You'll need something to support the knuckle as you press out the hub.

I just helped a friend put Tacoma knuckles with manual hubs on this 3rd Gen 4runner. We replaced the bearings and seals on the knuckles and then installed them on this rig. We videoed the job and I'll be posting it soon.

Honestly I'd just swing by a machine so and have them press it in for you.

Since I didn't have a press nor could I find anybody local willing to help me out or let me use their press, this is pretty much what I did when I went manual hubs on my old Tacoma...but I actually went to a local Toyota dealer. I took in my original spindles and the manual hub spindles and had them swap the manual hubs into my original spindles with new bearings and seals etc. They had no problem doing it for me even with me supplying the bearings and seals that I had bought online (OEM Toyota parts though of course). That was back in 2013. I think they charged me like $150. I've since found a good small auto shop that I've gone to a bunch for other stuff that would prob do this job for $50 or so.

I did my 95' w/ manual hubs with my 20 ton china freight press,, i remember, (kinda), that the one of the hardest things was removing the snap rings without the proper snap ring tool, i had a complete set, so I thought, but these Japs require the cup kind for lack of better description. You can do it with a screwdriver, but those pliers made it alot easier. I got mine at the NAPA store for about $20.
The bearing was super tight, but I got it,, sounded like a rifle when it finally broke lose.

In 2013, I'm guessing their shop labor rates were around $100/hr and they charged you 1.5 hours. My local dealership in the People's Republic of Northern California charges $150/hr and I bet they would quote me 2 hours for this job. I've also checked with a local machine shop out of curiosity to see what they would charge to do press work for rear axle seal bearings and they said around $200 for the set.

So, I reckon where you live makes a pretty big difference. Since I prefer doing my own work anyway, it was a no brainer to buy a Harbor Freight press since it's paid for itself after one job. The Harbor Freight 20 Press is currently selling for $175. I've also got more money into a press sleeve kit and extra press plates but now that I've helped two people with their rear axle seal bearing jobs and the recent manual hub conversion, it's been a worthwhile investment to document the jobs so I can share them on YouTube. The two rear axle seal videos (ABS and Non-ABS) will most likely be uploaded sometime today. The manual hub conversion will be within the next week hopefully.

I did all the rough editing and my buddy Sean just needs to finalize it and make it look and sound better. I'm guessing he'll have it done sometime this week.

Keep it coming - once I have enough money, space, and time to get all my own tools I'll never need to go to a mechanic again with your diy's. I'm glad to have such a good resource!
