Hi everyone, I mixed this question up on another thread and didn't get a clear handle on what the best practice is so I'm posting it again without polluting it.

I visited my dealer and asked for the price of extending my free maintenance (ToyotaCare on a '22 SR5 Taco, currently @ 22K miles) and was given the quote below. Note, I did not buy an extension at time of purchase.

    Maintenance: 6/55K mi = $795

I understand VSAs, which are extended warranties not maintenance plans, are negotiable and better deals can be found elsewhere from other dealers (I keep hearing about Jerry Johnson @ Midwest Toyota).

Does the same apply to maintenance plans? If so what are the prices AND mileage you've paid? I can't find the price/mileage combo my dealer quoted (above) anywhere on Toyota's website.

    Many thanks in advance!

I can't answer your money question, but have you ever considered learning how to do basic car maintenance items yourself? It's very fulfilling to learn how to work on vehicles.

i would never buy, suggest anyone buy, and do not know of anyone that purchased a maintenance plan from a dealer. if you are unable to do the work yourself, i would suggest finding a reputable independent shop.

what does 6/55K refer to? 6 years and 55 thousand miles?

what maintenance is included in the $795? oil changes and tire rotations of course, but is differential fluid, spark plugs, air and cabin filters, belt, and wiper blades included?

I’m curious also. Gives me an excuse to test drive the new stuff. Looked at a new sequoia and the oil smell was a big turn off. The salesman said it was burn off. Could be but I’ve bought a few new cars and never experience that before. You would think if it’s a known problem the dealer would just let the vehicle run until it doesn’t smell like an old farm truck.

It doesn't look like it covers much more than oil changes and a lot of fluff.

It would be cheaper to do basic service on your Tacoma yourself. But if you are not “mechanically inclined,” or get other reason no can, find outside shop for service.

If you are not DIY you can just go to Valvoline. The plan will only pay for 10k OCI anyway.

Even if you don't know how to turn a wrench learn how to change the air filter and cabin filter on youtube.

You will probably need new tires soon so just let them go and when you get new ones buy from a chain that includes rotation and balance. Discount tire is a sponsor here on the forum and will take care of you.

I wouldnt buy it. Isnt oil change by a dealer like $60. Why would you pay $800 to get 3 - 4 oil change? You still have to pay for brakes, air filter, wipers, new tire and differential maintenance. Also, you get free tire rotation at discount tires when you go there to buy the tire warranty for $110.

I don't think plan will work for me I drive Tacoma less than 2,500 miles a year it will be gone in 2-3 years I might only pay for 1-2 services before new one I have "mechanical Ability" but my time is more valuable to me

Takes less time me to change the oil yourself than to bring the truck to a mechanic. I do my own maintenance for the sake of efficiency.

I guess it does come down to what you value more. I've been working on cars since before I could legally drive them. For me, an afternoon working on my vehicles is very therapeutic and time well spent.

Post 3 is the winner here!

    (Modification on my part)

And even if you are adamant about using a dealer, just do it on an ad hoc basis. It allows you to be flexible if you change your mind

Agreed. Me too. My time and interests are best spent otherwise. Also, my dealer is relatively close so that further disrupts the other underlying (and false) assumptions.

Given that, I'm concerned with taking the car 'out of the Toyota network' anyway.

So my original (somehow derailed) question stands: Can maintenance plans also be purchased at a less cost (much like VSAs) elsewhere other than the original dealer?

    Many thanks!
