Magnaflow 18" or 14"

I'm looking to get a nice sounding exhaust for my 2001 4 cylinder. I've heard good things about the magnaflows but I've seen both the 11225 (14") and 11255 (18"). Whats the difference? I want it to be quite loud outside the truck but not too much drone when going ~60mph.

 

The main difference will be how loud it is.

I run the 18" and like it a lot. No drone, not too loud but can definitely hear it when I get on it.

In general, 24" if you want quite, like stock. 18" I you want to hear it. And 14" if you want the whole neighborhood to know you are back.

Are you looking at chambered (traditional style) or the straight through design (more like a glasspack)?

I've been thinking about going with a straight through style one since my truck is no longer my DD but it will be LOUD

Whats the difference between the chambered bad straight through designs?

 

Straight through is a single perforated tube that goes straight through the center of the muffler. It has a larger case and the combination of the case chamber, perforations, and fiberglass packing provide noise reduction without altering the engine's sound too much. It won't be nearly as loud as a straight pip but will probably have some of the characteristics.



The chambered muffler uses a bunch of baffles inside the muffler case that deflect sound waves into each other and provide a greater noise reduction and deeper sound.

 

You explained it really well. I guess I'm going with a chambered cause that's what the 11255 model is right? With the offset in and out.

 

it looks like the 11255 is actually a straight through style as well. It probably has an s-shaped pipe going through the center. I'm sure that it will sound great, though!

Magnaflows are straight through over priced glasspacks, basically no difference from a cherry bomb other than size and looks. Longer equals quieter. Chambered refers to the flowmaster style of mufflers, where they have no packing, just different chambers and baffles to cancel out the sound. Personally I prefer the flowmaster style because they actually change the exhaust tone. I have an imco(basically a 40 series flowmaster) on my 97 2.7 and it sounds about as good as a 4 banger can. I've never been a fan of the glass pack sound.

 

Eh, I wouldn't say that's entirely true since they use the case size and steel packing as well to change the sound. I've had a traditional style glasspack on a previous Toyota truck and it didn't sound anything like the Magnaflows in this thread.

same principle but theres so little packing and its so loose its alot less effective. they usually just ise fiberglass strands that start burning out like immediately. others like borla and magnaflow use stainless steel and ceramic packing. the extra cost comes comes with longevity.


my favourite muffler for these trucks is the fm44. sound is personal preference tho so idk why ppl ask others what they want.

In this case it seems like it's a question of getting the right volume, OP already wants the Magnaflow sound.

 

I basically don't want an exhaust that isn't constantly loud enough to be annoying I can make it annoyingly loud of I want to by giving it some extra gas.
