I'm sure there is a thread about this already, I'm still getting used to this site and I couldn't find it. Is there any difference that people have found from the Tacoma's built in Mexico Vs. the ones made in USA?? I noticed my Tacoma that will be here this week, was built in Mexico, and I was just trying to be aware of any issues that people have had that maybe I should keep my eye on? Thanks for all of the help!

The Mexican tacos have been proven to be more reliable, with a higher level of fit and finish.

    Oh look, another mod....

Yeah, there is ONE difference. Labor costs are cheaper in Mexico versus America.

Everything else is the same: Body style, drive train, transmission, color options, etc...

There's five hundred threads about this, full of five thousand opinions.

And no. There's no difference. Look up 5S/Six-sigma, an absolute bastard of a process that Toyota took to the extreme. They could set a plant on the moon and staff it with screeching lemurs and still have the same low defect rate.

My boss once worked for a company that supplied to Toyota. Per contract requirements they had to be compliant with 5S, a cleaning/organizing/waste reduction process. A Toyota VP was invited to tour their progress in adopting the system. He famously flew from Japan to Sydney, walked into the lobby, and right when management was walking out to greet him he pointed to a wastebasket. It was 8 inches from the wall. He pointed at it before even shaking hands, he said "you aren't ready," turned around, and caught the same taxi straight back to the airport.

They're serious about their processes. Doesn't matter where it's made

I’m pretty sure Toyota moved all Tacoma production to their Mexico plant a few years ago to make room for more tundras in the American plant

Considering Toyota has been building cars in Mexico for 20 years now, if there was any difference that affected quality or reliability, we’d have known about it (and Toyota would have fixed it) a long time ago. Honestly tho, most Tacomas are either built by Mexicans in Mexico, or Mexicans in Texas.

    Are Tacomas being built now?

Will the 4th gen be built in Mexico or USA or both? With more plants in more regions, Toyota should be able to build more Tacomas.

Why can't I buy a Mexican built Hilux, but I can buy a Mexican built Tacoma.

Will the Next gen Tacoma and Hilux be the same truck? If not, why can I buy one and not the other?

There's probably a 0.01 percent of potential buyers who would care where the Tacoma is built.

I think it matters where the truck is built as far as logistics are concerned. Getting parts to the factory, and getting trucks to the dealerships in the countries where they will be sold.

They are no longer made in Texas. It isn’t like you have a choice.

There's probably no difference. Remember, the powertrain and key components are likely still made in the same factories as before, it's just the assembly plant is different, Not even my 21 PRO made in Texas is perfect. Some small differences between the two rear side bumper caps and bedsides (barely noticeable unless you measure it), and the entire hood seems a bit low, again only measurable and not noticeable. Toyota wouldn't be the company it is today by cutting corners by moving factories. I'm confident that they've done thorough evaluation on this move of factory in terms of finances, logistics, legally speaking, maybe even politically speaking, and of course quality wise.

Edit: My 21 PRO has so far had zero issues, absolute zero mechanically and not even electrical mishaps. On other other hand, my Japan built 2018 4Runner has always been in and out with weird traction control issues.

So the wastebasket wasn’t as efficient as it could have been? Man, making him spend the night in my messy office would probably kill him.

OP—it’s the same stuff, bud. Enjoy your taco.

What’s the traction control doing? 4Runner still using the older drivetrain are much more reliable and better built

Sounds like what could’ve happened to me too. Luckily, I was made in America with Mexican parts lol.

I've been getting A-trac warnings and another warning and it comes on and off. It usually sorts itself out after 1 week. I've taken it to the dealer and they said it's nothing but an error code. Nothing's wrong when driving but it gives that error sometimes and it's a bit annoying

Yea that is weird for any Toyota to have that issue
