I’m quite sure all the fuel additives like gumout are gimmicks but I’m not a mechanic so maybe I’m wrong. I’d be curious to hear other opinions from people who are more knowledgeable.

It's a new truck, why would you be using fluids and that sort of stuff on a new vehicle

Just use high quality gasolines, I’ve never used additives

I've used both. I don't notice any difference with the Techron, but not saying it doesn't work. The Lucas seems to be more noticeable. Probably a higher concentration formula. Lately all I buy is the Lucas deep clean total fuel system cleaner.

    edit: and Costco gas

I used to run strictly Shell gas, but Costco has them beat by $.60 to $1 a gallon at times.

If you buy gas from anywhere with that Top Tier logo you should be good to go. They all contain the same detergents you get in a bottle of Techron afaik.

I have no idea if it works or not, but I use a bottle of Techron at each oil/filter change (5K).

All major chain gas stations and many others including Costco use top tier gasoline. Top tier. means that the additives/detergents exceed EPA requirements and standards. The additives and detergents are not all the same. Each company has their own patented formulation. The Techron additive may be the best , it is to most expensive to formulate. I have a friend who is a retired Chevron executive that tells me Techron is the best based on their testing and it costs more to make than other companies formulations. Yes he’s prejudiced but I believe him. I generally don’t use Chevron gas as here in California it’s generally 40 to 50 cents a gallon more than other brands. Shell is also about as expensive as Chevron and their additive formulation by many is considered as good as Chevron.

So does adding a bottle of fuel treatment such as Techron do anything extra ? I don’t know for sure, but it can’t hurt. I personally add a bottle to the tank every oil change. Sometimes every other oil change. I look at it like this, the amount of additives in the gas by the gas companies is minimum. There’s no doubt it does a great job cleaning deposits in our engines. I figure adding more every once in a while may help eliminating some “stubborn “ deposits that the amount in the gasoline doesn’t completely eliminate.
It’s like washing clothes, when you have heavily soiled clothes you may add more detergent to the washing machine to better clean. I kind of look at fuel additives the same way. To each his own.
