My shift linkage feels dry, like it wants to turn rusty. It no longer has that smooth buttery feeling when I shift. Is there a way to lube that? I have yet to change the oil in the transmission, it's on my list, but I don't think that would help, necessarily. Am I wrong? I know just enough about auto maintenance to get me in trouble.

    Thank you!

Slowly step away from the toolbox.......

I've owned two tacoma's over the past 14 years and I've been involved in lots of tacoma/toyota forums in those years. I've very rarely (if ever) heard anyone lubricating their linkages.

You NEED to change the fluid in your transmission. Synthetic oils make a big difference in making things shift smoother.

    We have the same truck.
Have you ever dropped the tranny for a clutch job on this one?
If not, you may want to look at your shifter. It's simple to do.

The first step is to remove your center console. It's not hard, just a few screws , bolts and a cool spring loaded collar to remove the shifter.
I'd check it for dirt, give it a good cleaning and a dobble of grease. If that doesn't make a difference then the problem is INSIDE the tranny.
Let me know if you need any help getting the shifter out, you can be looking at it in 15 mins.

Thank you. Great advice. I'll change out the gear oil first to see how that affects it. If no help, I'll tear into the interior to get a peek at the linkage.

Looks like great stuff. Thanks for the tips.

Oil change went without a hitch. So far, it seems to have really helped the action of the shifter. Let's hope it continues!
