I'm going to LS swap my 2013 Taco. It's the 4cyl one I'm just wondering which ls do you guys suggest I invest in my limit is around 15k so I'm thinking a crate motor.

I'd go for the iron block. They'll be more robust and WAY cheaper. No need to go crazy here. Pull one out of a Silverado instead of a Camaro for a big discount and build it up more if you want. LS engines run forever; they just do. Boost 'em if you really want to. That's the #1 element I miss from my old Silverado and the first thing I'll put in my Taco if/when this engine goes.

    LQ9 all day.

    go big or go home

But a built 5.3 would also do I guess. Just give it the boost

My Taco has nearly 200k miles. I thought about this myself for when/if my engine goes. But I do wonder how much extra work and cost it would be instead of just replacing with another 4.0. If anyone has done this or if the OP has the plans worked out, i'd love to see the details. What else is needed? New computer? New tranny? Driveline? Basically everything? Would it pass emissions? Etc..

Hell, I would even be happy with the 4.3 V6 they still put in the Silverados. That thing would be cranking close to 300hp and probably get the Tacoma 25 mpg easily.

That's for sure. My 2006 Silverado was getting at least as good mileage as my Taco, and it was bigger and heavier with a larger engine. And it'd drag a trailer with a little car on it and I didn't even feel like it was there. I liked my 1st Gen Taco V6 better than the current one for some reason, or perhaps it was just pulling less weight...

I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say moah powahh!!

I’d get either the 6.0 or 6.2 if I were to LS swap

    1. It’s cheaper and makes plenty of power.

    2. it’s going into a heavy ass truck and a couple extra pounds isn’t going to make a difference.

For Pete’s sake, the Tacoma has rear DRUM brakes. You are going to talk about “performance.”

i cannot roll my eyes hard enough.

Where are you located? I have a friend in Portland that specializes in rebuilding 4l80e transmissions and LS swaps. He is currently swapping out a 6.0L for a 5.3 in his drag strip/street legal Malibu as it's once of his test rigs along with his C10 truck.

OP, a lot goes into planning so you don't have a total shit show, or that 15K will disappear rather quickly if you are not doing most of the work.

Cooling a V-8 is a concern. Hell I'm still trying to decide if I'm doing a rear or front mount radiator.

crate motor LS3. The one in my Corvette... lot of fun.

    Next is a harness:

    Now you need the transmission.

    Then the harness and TCU.

This is a good way to do the fuel tank and pump...well cheapest I found.

    https://www.amazon.com/Chevrolet-Si...-684196971532&psc=1&ref=&adgrpid=103056501747

    Or....

Find a good totaled running truck. Part it out. Everything is there. Even look for a 6.0L 2500. That way you can use the AAM 10.5 rear axle. Winning.

I purchased my 2003 LS 5.3L and 4L60E with 65K miles on it for 900.00. Complete with harness.

    26056031_616467698477285_2820165873547764020_n.jpg

If you think a LS 5.3L can't perform, here is a buddies CJ-8 that is about as heavy as my 1 ton diesel on 42" tires. He drives this down the freeway at 75 mph no problem. Stock motor, LS6 intake manifold and TB from a Corvette, and headers. Dyno tuned. He has no problem rolling the tires.

This could get sporty anyway with CA emissions anyway. I would figure out that before anything else.

I hope 15k is just for parts. You'll spend another 15k in labor easily.
