I ran into a bit of trouble today replacing lower ball joints on my tacoma. Have done ball joints before, but these ones require a unique receiver cup. Following a post on here by a member XXXX his receiver cup had a 2.5" ID and 2.75" OD. I cannot find this cup anywhere, only 2.25 ID/2.5OD and 2.75ID/3.0OD and neither work. I assume several of you do your own balljoints, so does anyone know where I can get this cup, or of a kit that contains this size? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Wheeler's sells this pretty cheap tool from Total Chaos to remove your lower ball joints: I'm quite sure others can make the tool or use a oversized socket and do the same. I had good results with the tool and retired my oversized socket

Thank you for the quick reply! As far as Toyota is concerned once a bj goes bad you need a new lca. Its crazy that someone had to make a custom tool for this.

I researched the part you referenced and it appears they were made for 1st gen tacomas. So these work on second gens as well?

For anyone who may have this same problem in the future, I found one place that sells the correct adapter. EToolPros 2 7/16" ID x 2 3/4" OD x 2 1/4" L. My bushings are almost shot anyways so it may be cheaper to just buy a whole new LCA

It works on my 2nd gen with no issues. I don't get where you assume it's only for 1st gen Tacomas???

You need about a 3-inch long piece of cold roll tube, preferably a DOM (drawn over mandrel) type that will not have an inside seam, but it's easy to grind out. You can find them at a scrap yard or online, and 2.5" ID is a relatively common size. Shouldn't cost more than $15; the DOM style will cost a little more. You can borrow mine if you live nearby. Also the wall on mine is, I think, 3/16th's; 1/8th should work also - I know you don't want the wall too thick or the tube will not sit well on the LCA.

I noted this issue three years ago when I replaced driver-side BJ with a Moog lower ball joint that has a 2.5" OD. I have a BJ kit and a wheel bearing kit with various cup sizes but neither had the right-size cup. A neighbor works at a welding shop and he cut me a piece of tube from stock laying around his shop. I then used a grinding wheel made for use with a drill to grind down the seam inside the tube, only need to grind down about a quarter inch. I used the same cup to remove the larger of the two bushings on the OEM LCA - you may need to grind out a bit more of the seam.
See post #80 for use on the LCA - https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...lca-bushing-press.134846/page-4#post-15148562

Holy shit it lasts forever. It's 5.0ah, and has an indicator on the back with three bars to show how much juice is left. I can spend hours wrenching on the truck only to have it go down a bar. I only charge it every few times that I use it, and it charges pretty quick. I use the same battery on my dewalt chainsaw, and I can get a good amount of cutting out of it before the battery dies. They've come a long way.

That very well may be my next big purchase. My air impact can barely remove a bolt with 100 ft lbs of torque on it :(

It's well worth it IMO. I've used it countless times and now I cringe at the thought of undoing bolts by hand
