Loud clicking noises with too much wheelspin in snow and when braking hard.

    I was driving today in the snow (not much snow, just slick). When I pressed the throttle and the tires broke loose there was a really loud clicking sound coming from what sounded like right under my floor board. It would also do it when I would start sliding alittle when hitting the brakes.


    The sound resembled what it would sound like if you stuck a wooden spoon in a box fan. My Tacoma is a 2013 doublecab, 4.0, 4wd, auto with only 4135 miles on it.


    What the hell was this and is it common on Taco's (new to Toyota's). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Probably the brake system trying to brake each wheel as required to avoid a spin-out. It's normal.

    Take it easy as you approach stop signs etc, it took me a while to get used to back when I got mine.

    Wow, that's the ABS, I'm used to feedback in the brake pedal and no noise on my other vehicles. This is the first vehicle I've owned that has all of the traction control systems on it. I understand the ABS kicking in when braking but not used to it when the tires break loose. It scared the hell out of me when it did it, thought the fan blades were breaking off somehow.

    Its the traction control your feeling when the tires spin and the sway control you feel when you start drifting and the breaks click on one side or the other to break your drift. I'm new to the Tacoma but I've found in the snow it's best to hit the traction button on the left side of your dash once turning the traction control off but still leaving the sway control on. It will say "auto LSD, trac off" on your dash. This way when your tires spin a little when your taking off from a stop the traction control won't start clicking trying to gain traction (which annoys the crap out of me) but the sway control is still on so if you do slide sideways the breaks will kick on correcting your drift. If you purposely want to spin the tires and drift around you need to stop the truck and hold that traction button down for 5 seconds and that will turn the traction control (wheel spin) and the sway control (drift control) off completely and your free of all "clicking" nonsense.

    As far as when your hitting the brakes that's the ABS which also is annoying the snow and you'll need to do the ABS killswitch mod to be able to turn that off, granted you have the rear e-locker from the factory.

    Thanks for the helpful info, I'm just not used to driving a vehicle that wants to try and help itself. LOL Guess I need to get used to it. I also need to re-read the six books that came with the truck to figure out how all of these devises work. I read them last summer but didn't mess with any of them (summer time, no need to).

    I thought I had big problem . Sounded like teeth trying to mess that wasnt happening and doing damage . I am doing what Laure said and turning the traction control off . Thank you for the info .

    It doesn't turn it off unless you come to a complete stop and hold the button down. Then you have 1 wheel peel in the rear and it sucks. This also turns off the sway control.

    If you push the button once it uses the "auto-lsd" without engine restriction. As in it will use the brakes to slow down the wheel thats spinning and put the power to the tire with traction (without cutting out your engine power)

    Factory config on startup, when you spin it will cut your engine power to compensate. I'm sure you've felt this in older cars, makes the car jerk a little.

    Either mode, auto-lsd or standard config has the sway control on, so when you drift to one side or the other, that side brake will come on and stop you.

    Best thing for these trucks is a tire with some meat on it. You won't spin or slip hardly as much. Street tire, forget about it.

    Lol my truck came with TOYO all season that look like summer tread . Spin spin spin in 2 wheel drive . What tires do you like ?

    I'm on my second set of Cooper ST Maxx's, first set got me 65,000 miles and still looked decent. 25,000 or so on my current ones and they still look brand new.

    Sort of off topic but not completely - I have an 06 access cab, I was messing around in some snow the other day and when I have my truck turned close to 90 degrees (essentially drifting sideways?) I get a pretty noticeable tick/click almost sounds like its coming from a wheel, but hard to tell. This was in 2WD, rear wheels spinning

    Does 06 have any traction control other than ABS that would tick like this or am I experiencing something different?
