After 6 weeks of owning 4WP rear steel bumper that’s advertised as being BSM compliant it hasn’t worked. After install by 4WP been getting BSM disabled warning light almost daily since install. One minute it’s working the next minute it’s not. No rhyme no reason. We tried recalibrating several times as per Toyotas TSB with no luck. It’s time to return to OEM bumper to see if this issue stops. An experiment. 4WP will do the right thing and replace both sensors but only after the OEM bumper goes back on and I’m still getting the disabled BSM light. Looking for recommendations on another steel rear bumpers that are BSM compliant. I truly believe my BSM sensors were either mishandled or shorted directly after instal. Truck has 28k miles Why ? However 4WP won’t refund the money until OEM works after reinstall. If OEM goes back on and the issue stops then it’s not the sensors.if OEM goes back on and still occurs 4WP will reinstall steel rear bumper and new BSM sensors. Again would like recommendations on another steel rear bumper that actually works with OEM BSM sensors. Truck has 28000 miles and never had this issue before. Day of install of steel bumpers issues almost in a daily basis, Let’s hear any suggestions on a BSM compliant rear steel bumper that’s advertised working with steel rear bumpers. Much appreciated

Buckstop and apogee are your only other options. There may be a third but I can’t recall right this second
Edit: since this got revived; There are two more bumpers now that maintain BSM. Chassis unlimited and fishbone off road. I went with fishbone. It’s $700 and works well. The BSM sensor angle is slightly off making the sensors slightly more sensitive, but otherwise it’s pretty nice

These sensors are VERY sensitive to any alignment issues. Even after a lift with my stock bumper, I was getting Axis faults on my sensors. I ended up taking them out and got a bumper that is not BSM compatible.

Went back to Toyota for another recalibration of BSM. Within a few blocks driving from dealership the BSM disabled light returned. The plan now is 4WP wants to reinstall my OEM bumper before paying for the BSM replacement. If going back to OEM bumper then I’ll be refunded back for the steel bumper plus install. If BSM issues still persists on OEM bumper then those BSM get replaced and I’ll have the opportunity to go back with steel bumper. I really want the 4WP bumper to work and it’s bumming me at as they have never had a problem with BSM and their steel bumper. What’s so special about my truck that I’m the only with this issue.
Attached a copy of the diagnostic report. 4WP insists in replacing and recalibrating BSM as Toyota too expensive. Having a bad feeling about that. Am I missing something here ?

This week 4WP going to re instal OEM rear bumper to see if I still get BSM disabled alert. Now If I get the BSM disabled alert with stock number then 4WP has both brand new BSM sensors and will replace and re install the 4WP rear bumper. They refuse to have Toyota do the job cause of the cost. I assume if 4WP installs two new BSM sensors it will require calibration. 4WP insists they are capable of calibration. To sum it up they want to see if going back to stock corrects the problem. I really want to keep the rear steel bumper, but before they actually put new BSM on they insist on failure With re installed oem bumper. Any thoughts if 4WP has the equipment and no how instead of Toyota service. I can’t explain why my truck is throwing codes when they never had this problem.

Fwiw, there’s a thread around here where a fella is relocating the bsm’s to the taillight housing. It seems he’s having success.

I haven’t had any issues with my Apogee and the shop that did the install had never even done a BSM compliant bumper before.

I’m also curious if you ended up with an Apogee. I had one on my old truck and the BSM was fine.

Sorry for reviving this older thread. I’m looking at the Fish Bone bumper now, can you share your opinion about it after running it for a while?

It’s solid. Had it less than a year, but the coating is holding up really well so far. The license plate lights are pointed directly at the backup camera and they wash out the image almost completely at night, even with halogen bulbs. You can turn your headlights off while in reverse, but I opted to get a disable in reverse “DIR” harness (puppypunter builds them now I believe). However that harness is an expensive solution when turning the lights off works just as well.
Install was straight forward and easy enough, I did it by myself.
Removing the parking sensors is difficult because they are so fragile. I had to replace two of the clips that hold the sensors in place. I chose to order aftermarket sensors from Amazon and use the clips with my oem sensors.
Adjusting it where I wanted it took some time, and then when I thought I was finished, I realized I had installed the bolts that go through the frame upside down and left 2 or so inches of threads pointing downwards. They were just asking to get banged up and make potential future removal a pain in the ass. I’d suggest installing the bolts that mount vertically through the frame with threads pointing upwards the first time.
Have not used it for a recovery, but I’d probably still use the hitch anyway, just out of fear that snatching from the shackle hangers would tweak the adjustments of the bumper which I spent forever on.
BSM works fine aside from them being more sensitive which I mentioned earlier.
Someone just posted a new BSM compatible bumper that’s even cheaper on Amazon, but I prefer the looks of the fishbone personally. Looks a lil beefier

The listing on the jungle doesn’t show parking sensor cut outs but you can see them in that users installed photo below in the same post
Edit: I also sources some black plastic plugs that fit the square back up cut outs really nicely. HMU if you need them in the future and I’ll dig through my emails and find a link for the size
