TW search isn't being nice to me. Recently saw a fb post about oil catch cans. Had never heard of such a thing. Watching the videos seems to make sense to install one, since "it can't hurt so why not?" seems to be the prevailing thought.

Anyone have a link for more info? I read that the 2GR-FKS has both direct injection AND port injection, so at low RPM/speed the intake valve is getting washed with fuel so this isn't needed. Can anyone verify that please?

Thanks for the vid but it is only installation and no discussion about why or why not, or if the 3rd gen has both direct and port injection or not.

The 2GR-FKS does have both PI and DI fuel systems. An oil catch can could be useful if there is significant oil being purged into the intake plenum via the PCV system. On a healthy engine this should be insignificant and the small amount of oil vapor that is combusted should make no measurable difference in power, fuel efficiency, etc. I've heard of catch cans being used for the issue that some have where oil pools at the back of one of the heads when on a steep incline for extended amount of time, but I have not put much effort into understanding the issue and "solution" in detail.

I think the concern is long term carbon build up on the intake valves and surrounding area. Wanting to keep my truck forever but don't want to waste money on something useless, thus the questions.

I weighted the benefit and decided not to because:

    1. the port injection can clean the intake valves pretty well
    2. I maintain the truck religiously, the piston rings work properly, thus minimal blow-by
    3. I also don't tow or keep the RPM high all the time so even less chance of blow-by
    4. because 2 and 3 the crankcase doesn't need constant venting

but, I'm 100% sure if you install the catch can, you will catch some. If you drive the truck hard, then you catch more to make it worth it

My intake runners were gunky as hell when I put my supercharger on. 40,000 miles. I installed a catch can the same week to prevent all that gunk from making its way into my s/c.

Catch cans are a must if the vehicle is only Direct injection. since this will keep the intake manifold cleaner for longer. but toyota was smart and did DI and port injection with the port injection they can clean some of the gunk left behind by the PCV system. with my old sonata i had to do a intake service ever 12k miles. that was $300 dollars at the dealer or $15 if you DIY but it was a pain. now i just put a bottle of Techron( or your favorite system cleaner) and that will keep it as clean as posible.

So, get a catch can AND a cold air intake? How about a throttle body spacer?

Its only needed if you offroad. The reason being that at extreme angles we have seen cylinders 5/6 get flooded through the PCV which causes a lot of burning (white smoke) or worst case engine failure. Outside of daily use they are not needed.

    Yeah
I do a lot of high angle climbs while off road, I was constantly having smoking / stalling / failure to restart. I’d have to coast backwards down these inclines till it was flat then crank and crank and crank to get it to restart and then it’d blow smoke for a few minutes.
    I installed a catch can.
I off-road even harder now and have not had a single repeat of the problem since.

If you just daily the truck and maybe do an overland trip once or twice a year you’re fine, save your $25. I crawl my truck every weekend and it made all the difference for me, well worth the $23.99 I paid for my can off Amazon.
