So long story short, I've had a local Salt Lake City shop replace my steering rack twice since last October because of a faulty rack. I worked and fought with them for months trying to get the steering and alignment working well. I ended up giving up on them and took it to a different shop Impulse Offroad who did a fantastic job getting my alignment dialed in. Fast forward a few weeks to last night. I was doing some tinkering and checking and discovered that the first shop used Power Steering Fluid (or at least some other clear fluid) instead of ATF. I need to figure out how to handle this to get the first shop to replace the entire steering system.

What would you do in this situation?

Edit: So, I've called a couple dealerships and a few independent shops and they all say that using power steering fluid instead of ATF won't really cause any damage. Power steering fluid is a thicker viscosity so it will feel a little stiffer when it's cold, ATF has some detergent additives, but they are nearly the same thing. I think I may just leave it for now and when it's time to flush the system I'll just change it back to ATF.

Sounds like a bit of a saga, glad to hear no major damage from the fluid. I have been burned a fair number of times when it comes to shops in Salt Lake, including some of the specialty 4x4 shops. Unfortunately I am also needing to replace the rack. I am tempted to do it myself, but I mostly just want it done correctly the first time. I imagine after your first shop ordeal, you have talked to a fair number of places, would you happen to have any recommendations for a shop to do this kind of work?

Sadly, I do not have any recommendations. There is a shop close to my work that has been highly recommended to me but I haven't needed to take my truck in there yet. Enginuity Automotive Service is the name of the place. I'm going to give them a try next time I need work done that I can't do myself.
