    Hey everyone,

I been searching for a good hood antenna mount for my gmrs ghost antenna. The Midland MXTA16 seems to be discontinued. Was wondering if ditch light mounts work for this as well.

    Thanks!

This is what I used to get it away from the cabin a bit, mine is midway down the hood currently holding my 2m/70cm ham NMO mount so I can switch between half wave and the stubby depending on the the amount of trees around. It already has the NMO and coax built into it and I have had zero issues so far. Ditch light brackets will work however most ditch lights come with a 3/8" hole because most ditch lights use 3/8" or smaller hardware. If you plan to use an NMO mount you will most likely have to drill out the ditch light bracket with a larger hole. I think I have seen a ditch light bracket with a CB antenna hole and with ditch light holes but again you would have to drill it out. Cant remember the name of the fab shop that makes those though.

For my GMRS radio I currently use a Rago Fab CB antenna mount on the rear of my truck and I had to do exactly that. Drill out the hole for an NMO mount so I could use my shorty GMRS antenna. If I were to do it again I would do 2 hood mounts one on each side. One for GMRS and one for HAM. Those hood NMO mounts just make it super simple

I have been looking for this also since I will be getting a GMRS radio at some point...waiting for the 50W Midland to see how it is but still leaning towards the Wouxun (pronounced "ocean") KG-1000G at this point due to being able to mount the faceplate anywhere and the unit itself under the seat. Here are the antenna pages I have saved:

Any chance you could post a pic or two of this? I'm trying to mentally figure out how it works.

I got the 3dB antenna and emailed Midland about the best placement for it, either on the hood or the rear bed corner above the tail light. They replied it’s best to mount it at the rear bed corner.

I mounted mine to the brush guard on the front of my truck. My reception is fantastic.

What is your opinion of the two pointing points via the TX and RX perspective? Was there any difference?

doesn't that antenna require a ground plane for optimal performance?

Yes it does. I use mine on a fender mount for my ham radio and have not had any noticeable performance issues.
