Looking at 2005 Tacoma trd off road

I’m looking at buying my cousins 2005 trd off-road loaded 6 speed with touch screen Bluetooth back up camera hard bed cover oversized tires new brakes and 85k miles. He’s asking $16,500. What do you think of this price? He did a recall on the undercarriage. What should I look for? Seems solid. Looking forward to many posts and reads on the forum!

 

Prices are ridiculous right now. Probably mid teens.
2005 and early 2006 had a poorly designed head gasket. Check to see if it’s been replaced. Also check the frame for rust, specifically the boxed area near the front cats.

 

Thank you. How do you like your trd off road? Any upgrades I’m thinking dual exhaust. Is flowmaster still the go to muffler?

 

I have the TRD exhaust on mine and really like it.

 

2005 and early 2006 4.0 had some head gasket issues. I personally would avoid a 2005 if you are going to be paying top dollar.

 

Does the trd exhaust come stock on the trds?

 

No but it is an option you could have added from the dealer.

 

Is the head gasket an expensive fix? How do you know if it’s bad?

 

it can easily be a couple thousand to fix. There are a ton of threads on here about it and the symptoms.

Have had no issues in 3 years!!!!
Oil is full when I change it at 5K
I have now 225,000
Only thing that I had to replace is the alternator
I put a suspension lift on so all that is new along with rotors drums pads and shoes

I generally skip buying first model year vehicles due to all the bugs the manufacturer hasn't yet figured out. They're more problematic than a car that's been on the roads for a few model years.

 

thanks for the feedback! I’m really considering it though. Low miles for the year no issues yet… I’ve seen others online for 18-20k$ do you think this is a fair price?

 

I think paying more than a few grand for a truck from 2005 is crazy. But, these are crazy times for car buying. Id never buy from family.
