Looking at a used 2013 TRD Sport.

    188,863 miles

    They are asking $15,800.

It is from South Carolina (1-owner) and then sold to current owner and driven in OH for a year (where I live). Brief look at frame -- a little surface rust but looks fairly clean.

We have a 1999 F-150 that is getting a little long in the tooth due to rust, etc, which we plan to sell.

Also have a 2019 4Runner. (We really like this vehicle).

Any thoughts on things I should look for?

How would it compare to our 4Runner (driving, maintenance, etc).

    Does the price seem reasonable?

Get pics of the under side and post them here.

Bright, clear, daylight pics of the frame, axles, under the engine, etc..

Also that TRD Sport has been downgraded to 16in wheels for some reason.

Does it come with maintenance documentation?

At that mileage, age and price *I* would want that.

Do you have a trusted independent shop you could pay to inspect it?

Yes, I should probably just take the time to do that.

Living in OH, a South Carolina vehicle is attractive due to rust.

I work from home, and don't drive a lot, so older vehicles make sense for me.

We were thinking of getting a used Rav4 to replace the F150 and switch to a trailer behind the 4Runner for pick-up needs, but then this showed up in the neighborhood ...

Thats more then I would pay. Due to mileage I would assume the entire suspension needs to be replaced and I would carefully look over the engine and transmission.
I admit in a crunch I paid $15000 tax and all for a 2008 trd sport 4x4 dclb with about 150K back in 2016. I've replaced the entire suspension system by now and have hit 230K without engine or transmission issues.

What all does this entail, and do have a rough idea of cost, and is this a DIY job?

I would be fine with 13K, 16K is just to high in my opinion.
Around 200K I replaced everything with new OEM parts. I think I'm forgetting something but here goes - front and rear shocks, upper and lower control arms, sway bar links, outer tie rods, steering rack which includes inner tie rods, oem boots on one cv axle, replaced other aftermarket cv axle with oem. I think the parts total was around $2000. I am a professional mechanic with access to a lift so I didn't think it was hard but it could be a lot if your not experienced and just in your parking garage.
Unless you really need a truck bed I would look at the Rav4, we have a 05 civic with 180K and a 08 tacoma with 230K, decent chance I will sell the tacoma in the next year or two and buy a CRV, maybe a Rav4.

Agree with this especially as far as the suspension bits are concerned. See if they can provide any maintenance history docs for this. If the normal wear items haven't been touched, you'll have to plan for the expense of the work. It's not ridiculous expensive parts and labor, but it's not cheap either by any means. +- 200,000 miles is a lot for any car: Even for a Tacoma that lived its life in the south for a time.

Steering rack status is critical. Check the bellows for dampness, cracks and leaks. If it's original and leaking, you're talking -major- p&l expense, even at a local shop that works on Toyota's.

We have a 14 RAV we like a lot.

It will operate at a much lower cost than the Tacoma, even if the quality of both were equal. It won't do some things the truck will, and visea versa.

If a trailer with the 4runner meets your needs......

Only you can decide your requirements

PS, I get it about older cars and localized driving. And while that's definitely doable, you still don't want to overpay going in the door.

I gave my son my ‘18 TRD OR and just picked up an 08 TRD OR with 188k miles and paid $12k for it. Spent like 7 months looking for a truck because the prices for these trucks are crazy even for those with high mileage. Like @joeyv141 i did a lot of stuff to it which cost me around $2k for the parts. Here is my list for comparison: new suspension (bilstein shocks), front calipers and rotors, rear drums and pads, new water pump, new a/c compressor, new hoses, new pulleys, belts, plugs, oil & filter.

I have a friend who is a high school’s mechanic teacher and the school has a partnership with Toyota. Had all the work done at the school by the students and didn’t have to pay for the labor. Not sure if this is an option for you, but a good way to have it done right and save on labor costs.

Drove it -- does not drive as nice as '19 4R, but OK.

Oil was nice and clear after driving it for 15 minutes or so.

Tires are wore out and pretty loud.

The price is just too high. I'd find everything wrong with it and make him an fair offer (for what it's actually worth) and wait for a callback

Looks like it's going to need a new receiver hitch. If that's the case check the rear bumper reinforcement beam because they may to be replaced too. I agree with others and negotiate the price.

I have a 3rd gen T4R and a 10' utility trailer. I got my '15 Taco 4 years ago thinking that I'd retire the T4R. The trailer still got used more then the truck ever did and I (personally) found the T4R to be a more comfy for anything trip more then 2 hrs long. The Taco will be looking for a new home very soon and I plan on getting a 5th gen T4R to pull the trailer.

After seeing the pic of that hitch, the amount of rot didn't make sense at first but then I noticed that the safety chain ring on the right side seemed to be boogered up.. I wonder if the Taco was used to launch a boat into salt water? Being on the SC coast, that would make sense ( and make me personally not want to touch it with a 10 foot pole)

That makes sense -- I was wondering why the hitch was so rusty and the rest of the vehicle looked pretty clean.
