I've decided to get all the wheel studs replaced by those long ones from ARP
But I think I just realized the stock spare tires, which I believe use OEM washer style lug nuts, are not going to work.
I don't think there exist OEM washer style lug nuts that are open-ended to allow long wheel studs to pass through.

So, is matching aftermarket wheel and tire as spare the only option?
I don't plan on rotating the spare, so it'll just stay mounted there forever under the frame. So it doesn't justify spending $$$ to get the same wheel as the other 4.

I think I want to stay with the same tire and size as the other 4, but can I just get super cheap wheel, even the offset, width is different?

For example, if I run 265/65/18 on all 4 with 18x9 0mm offset wheels. Can I run the same tire but on 18x8.5 +20mm offset wheel as spare? Not for long but maybe limp 100 miles until I get to a shop to patch things up.

But are they going to work with stock spare?

I was under the impression from this post

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/lug-nuts-for-spare-tire-not-fitting.412241/

that the aftermarket 60 degree tapered acorn style lug nuts won't work with stock spare, and I assume only these OEM lug nuts work

and there are open ended version?

If you refering to the stock steel rim spare, they do not use the shank part of the OEM lugs. On the stock lugs, that radiused/tapered edge is what they seat against so you don't need to use the stock ones. Aftermarket open end acorn nuts will be fine. Spare is only meant to get you home or to a tire shop anyway.

I stole this picture from @Plain Jane Taco
They make long Mag-seat lug nuts.
But you need to understand. Yes, they will work on the steel spare wheel.
But they are NOT meant be used as permanent lug nut for the spare/steel wheels.

thanks guys, I'll use the acorn open ended lug and test on the spare, I probably don't need to mount it just test fit with a stud in hand for a dry run and report back
