Locking gas cap

are you from Gainesville area? Which oriley store did you order it?

 

That's an interesting cap. I think the tether would annoy me...but if it works for you and there's no CEL errors, then go on with your badd self! lol

 

Not currently in Gainesville, I've been in SoCal for about four decades now. But I'm a proud graduate of the University of Florida, GO GATORS !!!

I ordered the cap at O'Reilly's online store and had it delivered.

 

I think the deal is that the Stant Corp went bankrupt in 2019 and was purchased by H.I.G. Capital. H.I.G Capital likely licenses the design and name of the 10504 gas cap (amongst many other original Stant products) to other manufacturers who are then free to manufacture, and distribute these products to the marketplace with the "Stant" label on them. So in reality, today there are no "genuine" products manufactured by Stant Corp since this entity no longer exists. As such, we need to hope and rely on these licensed manufacturers building the cap to the original Stant cap design specification. As a result, you could wind up with slightly different looking gas caps that are built to the same original "Stant" specs. I would think that legitimate auto parts stores, like O'Reilly's, only purchase from one of these licensed manufacturers. However, if you buy it on eBay it's touch and go as to the actual design of the cap.

 

I went in to oreillys store TWICE for the same part number cap. Received both iterations, both give me CEL.

 

I was originally concerned about the tether also. But it turns out to work well because it is attached into a slot in the cap where it loosely fits in. So when you rotate the cap into and off the gas tank the tether itself dos not move to get in the way.

I also chose to install it attached to the hole in the fuel door furthest away from the tank so that when I remove the cap it just hangs down not banging into the side of the truck.

 

That's not good, keeping my fingers crossed that mine never does that. From what I've read the CELs caused by gas caps are a result of the car's computer running a leak check in the evaporative missions control (EVAP) system that fails. This is why many caps state that the cap must be installed with at least three clicks, I think most people wind up with tens of clicks when they screw the cap in. But if you still get CEL lights after you've ensured the cap is on there tight, then either the cap itself is leaky or the cap does not tightly threads itself onto the tank.

 

That is a very interesting summary. I'm just glad I received a Stant with the "S" on the side from an O'Reilly's in Northern VA that doesn't cause CEL errors.

What part of LA do you live? I grew up in El Sereno next door to Alhambra and departed in 1986. I still have family around that neighborhood as well as the Inland Empire.

I lived in JAX for a lil bit when I worked for Boeing and the peeps I met are big-time Gator fans...I suppose because Gainesville is just west of JAX.

Took the 10504 gas cap with plastic keys back to Oreilly's. Asked them if they had more in stock. He brought out one that had a lanyard and plastic keys. Part # 10591. Going to put it on this evening. Looks like this was the original part # superseded by 10504. And apparently redesigned.

 

My stant locking gas cap came with small metal keys....now plastic?

 

I lived in West LA, and worked at several of the aerospace companies on Imperial right across from LAX (Hughes Aircraft Co, TRW, Raytheon) and also in Culver City. Nowadays I live in south OC. But I went to engineering school at UF.

 

I had to look at what date I wrote that! lol

I did not frequent those areas near LAX...except one of my love interests who I met at a club after I graduated HS ('85) lived in Culver City.

The OC brought to mind a jingle about Toyota of Orange..."oh, you won't get a lemon, from Toyota of Orange". (Circa 1982) lol

My Stant locking gas cap works great...and I have NOT had any CEL errors.

 

This POS threw a CEL in less than 24 hours. Think I'll just give up.

Which O'Reilly's online location did you use?

I went through three auto parts stores and all threw a CEL within 24/hrs.

All accepted my returns with no issues.

Finally, I went online (since O'Reilly stores are not in Delaware) and picked a northern VA location that shipped my cap. I had to spend $30 to get free shipping but I was OK with that.

 

I got this cap in-store.

 

I would order the one online from VA...seems like they're trying to push a replacement that doesn't work the same way.

Again, you'll have to spend at least $30 to get it shipped. Maybe you can find a couple of items that aren't too expensive like I did: Extended curved needle nose pliers & a cordless Engraver.

 

I have learned that another potential cause for a poor seal at the gas cap is that the car's fuel tube has accumulated dirt. The recommendation is to clean it and the gas cap with wet wipes to ensure there's no dirt that could provide a leak point.

There is also an O-ring at the base of the gas cap that needs to be kept "pliable" throughout the use of the gas cap. This also needs to be dirt free and you can use something like petroleum jelly to ensure it is "pliable" on older gas caps.

 

I never asked the dealer what the locking gas cap would add to the price of the truck. Looking at my invoice now, i see they charged me $15 for it. So far after 2 years no codes.

 

im not able to find a Stant brand locking cap.
i bought a cap from Canadian Tire which appeared fine until weather warmed up.
i got a check gas cap message one day then check engine light next day.

returned the cap to Canadian Tire today. i will look for a stant cap and/or risk manage gas theft.
