Don’t know. Depends what kind of locker you want and if you plan on changing that and the gear ratio.
And what else it comes with.

hood scoop is not a factor. They cause glare requiring a sticker. People trade for them. They reduce visibility and serve no purpose. That’s why ORs don’t use them. To off road.
They also make it harder to put a hood solar panel.

Tacomas get used to overland and wheel. Part of that is solar charging.

A very, very small percentage of Tacomas get used for car camping and off-roading. The rest never leave the pavement. Half of them with bed racks and bumpers still never leave the pavement.

Beautiful color in that light. What size rims and tires?

It's not my truck, but he's running 285/70/17, which is already becoming the sweet spot for a no rub fitment.

I think people should do as they please with their money. There's plenty of people that build their TRD OR model and don't take it off road.

A locker is really just a fake sunglasses holder.

In my case, the difference between SR5 and Sport was $1K or so, and I liked the package on that sport vehicle better. ORs were sold out or came with sunroofs, which I don't like.

If you want to build up a 3rd gen, get an SR5, put new tires and better suspension that gives you 2" lift max. You'll follow a Brocoma anywhere. Get a locker and now you can show Brocomas where to go.

Agreed. Black fender flares peaked in the late 90's on Chevy Suburban 2500's. For 3rd gen and 4th gen, color matched just looks better.01-1667421709105@2x.jpg

agreed, especially when we save all this money, go out of our way to buy our dream truck in our dream color that we want. No thanks to the black flares at that point.

completely agree. at least when i'm not offroad, i get a lot of utility out of my camper shell for moving and temporarily storing stuff.

for the 3rd gen the off road was like 1k more than the sport. That, and many sport owners like myself prefer the aesthetics of the truck while still having 4wd as an option for offroading in most situations.

Serious question: do people use the locker in snow? I’ve never had/needed a locker, so I wouldn’t know.

During our 2020 ice storm I had mine on frequently. My truck was 2WD though.

One of the only things I don't like on any gen is black flares. Color matched seem to give the truck a more finished look. And are easier to clean.
The skewp just makes the 4th gen look that much more menacing. When they first revealed the 4th gen and I saw that Blue Crush Taco Sport, I thought wow, that is perfect.

I'm the exact opposite - as direly straight faced as it comes. To me the color matched sport flares make the truck not even look like a truck anymore. IMHO, the color matched flares take away nearly all the off roading aggressive look, and give it more of an SUV soccer-mom-mobile look. Totally fine if all you do is tootle around the mall parking lot, or use it to take Justin to his weekend practice at the soccer complex.
Way too much of the body color makes it look like a car, not any kind of aggressive off road truck.

Not just that, but if you ever actually take it off road those painted flares quickly start showing all the scrapes and how they are black under that paint anyway.

As to the OPs question, I love the look of the scoop, but purchased a 4 door OR to tow our off road camper and to do a bit of crawling.
One of the last mods I may end up doing is trading for a scooped hood, or just outright buying one.
Definitely not worth what you get with the OR as a base for a decent lifted rig.
