Still getting used to the new truck. Is it possible to exit the vehicle and lock the doors while the truck is still running? This is one of the most common things where I live. How else do you run into the store or the post office?

Leaving a vehicle running completely unattended? Seriously? Stepping outside while standing next to it is one thing, but not "far away, inside the store".

You asked for answers, so do not complain about mine.

Typically one would turn the truck off so it doesn’t go missing.

you shut off the vehicle, lock the doors then restart. if you want to keep the truck warm or something you should have a remote start installed.

my F350 was the only truck id ever have let run and warm up. but again i could put the key in and lock the doors at the key pad. but it was also often outside of my window and loud as hell

You gotta either leave the key fob in there and manually lock it, or turn it off, lock it and then hit lock 3 times to start it.

I have done this many times but I have a standard transmission and a key. I have to leave the key in the ignition with the truck running and then use a 2nd key to lock the doors from the the outside.

I do this when I am running around with my beasties in the back seat and its too hot outside to turn the truck off.

I have no idea if this is a thing on the smart key Tacos, since I have a MT, but can you use the manual key to lock the doors while the truck is running (fob in truck)?
This is what I have to do in my BMW, and I understand the desire to be able to for the critters, but my desire for it is a holdover from my Dominos delivery days, and keeping the cab and pizzas warm during other deliveries.

Yes. You need to take the physical key out of the fob with the vehicle running, close the door then use the physical key to lock the vehicle. There is a physical key inside your fob that you can use to manually lock/unlock the tailgate and doors. I do this all the time when it is in single digits and negative temps outside. Those saying don't do this live in a soft ass climate.

It is, you nailed the process.

Turn off. Close, lock doors. Use the app. Turn truck on. 10 mins. Truck shut off. If need more time, turn on again.

This is if you have this function. This is what I did over hot days when driving around. Dog was with me in the truck. It’s not like I can leave him home - I mean look at him. Way too cute. Plus, with a silver truck he matches.

You don't have to leave the FOB in the truck. You can take it with you.

Personally, I turn my truck off if I'm leaving it. I don't want to waste the fuel or tempt a theif.

This works like a champ! Thanks @Breknraj. Here's an unexpected finding with it: If you use the key to lock the door, you HAVE to use the key to unlock the door. Touching the handle or pressing the unlock button on the fob won't unlock it.

MOST people don't lock their doors where I live (home or cars). We run into the post office with the car running, get the mail, get back in the vehicle and leave. The whole process takes like 60 seconds. We don't have mail delivery so it's a well tuned process. It wastes way more gas to turn it off and turn it back on. Personally, I lock my doors because even though I practically live in Mayberry, there are dishonest people everywhere... though I've never heard of anyone getting a car stolen in my town while leaving it running.

I live in a similar situation. I still turn it off, because if it's longer than about 10 seconds it saves fuel to turn it off. If you're gone for 30 seconds it's less wasteful to turn it off and start it again. That said, this is not a judgement or a admonition. I'm just sharing what I do. I fully support and respect your right to do as you choose. :oldglory:

Are you saying you leave your truck running when going into the post office because you think it saves gas?

I leave my truck running when I go into the post office because it takes me longer to turn it off and start it up again the it does to get my mail and get back to the truck.

    AND it saves gas.

Are you aware of the various cars on the market that automatically shut the engine off at stop lights to save gas?

I can see leaving my truck running to keep the heat or air conditioning running, but not to save gas. You can do what you want. I just don't understand your reasoning.

Here's some other info on the subject.
