    You can find it on the white label on the B-Pillar, basically right by the front door striker. Look for the bar code, then it is just above the end of the bar code.

    It is the first half of what Toyota calls the "katashiki". The second half explains some of the upper body options.

    so how is one to know if a particular 'chasis only' is the proper one to fit the rest without any code stamped onit?
    that is my curiosity question

    Not 100% sure I understand your question.
    Your frame has (had) VIN labels on it, just like the body. Like in the RH fender area. I recently found one hidden above the spare tire carrier lift when I was tearing the old rear frame off my truck.

    i was told there is a difference in chassis starting in mid '97
