Has anyone tried the osram cool blue boost h11 off-road halogen lights? I’m wondering how they work, life span, and if they’re plug and play since they are 80W bulbs. They say they aren’t street legal, so I’m also curious if anyone has had issues running them on the road.

Also, if anyone has any other recommendations for headlight upgrade I’d love to hear it! I’m running Baja Designs lights, which are all 5000k color temp so I’d like to have all the same color lights. I obviously want them to work well, but I don’t necessarily need them to be the brightest headlights ever. I really just want to be at least as bright as stock, with the same optics, and 5000k color

The only bulbs that are street legal are stock wattage halogens. Higher wattage, led and HID retros are all not legal. That said there are better and worse ways to do lighting mods, using a halogen bulb in a halogen housing is better as it keeps the identical beam pattern and characteristics. Halogens are not naturally at the 5000k color temperature, so to get there they need to be heavily coated to cut out the yellow portion of their light spectrum (the majority) and allow the blue spectrum to be more apparent (the minority). A 5000k coating will pay a heavy tax in output, in this case Osram trys to make up some of that loss with higher wattage. While I do not endorse coated bulbs, these bulbs do look like they meet your criteria of being a color match while being from a quality brand, and unlike stock wattage bulbs they have boosted output to compensate for the output loss. Coated bulbs and higher wattage bulbs have reduced lifespan over standard bulbs.

You could run those without further modification, but you will get better performance with a standalone harness, which really helps with over wattage bulbs. See the thread below for info on a harness and higher performing non-coated bulb options (won't be 5000k):

Edit: They do have a 75w H9 version of the bulb, which would outperform the 80w H11 version. It can be run as plug and play with some trimming to the bulb base covered in the thread I linked above. Lifespan will be further reduced though.

Your Baja lights are also not street legal and blinding due to their lack of cut off. They should not be run on the street with traffic ahead of you. So in theory, no-one will see that your lights colors don't match anyway. Something to consider. See the information in this thread:

That was a lot of really good info, thank you @crashnburn80!

My hope was to switch out low and high beams to those bulbs (I’ll probably take your advice and use the H9), and run the fogs to a dedicated switch to use in conjunction with high beams (either off-road or when I wouldn’t blind others). Unfortunately though, I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing when it comes to wiring so it may be a while lol.
