    Greetings wonderful folks.

I understand that this is Tacoma world, however I just have a small inquiry and wanted to pick at the minds of like minded enthusiasts.

My kids are growing. They've all grown up riding in the back of my 2016 Tacoma. I have 3 of them, oldest is 8, youngest is 2. I find that long trips are quite the squeeze now a days and have been looking into future potential vehicles. 3 row SUV would suit us better as they grow older. Also something with more comfort and modern "luxuries"

With all that said, what are everyone's thoughts on the Lexus GX. I was looking at the new 550, as well as the 460. Leaning more towards the 460 as it would probably be way cheaper than the brand new 550, but dang the new GX 550 looks AWESOME SAUCE.

Also my Tacoma is 2wd. She does work when she needs to. I'm partly leaning towards the GX for the full time 4wd, I'd definitely be able to take it places the Tacoma would struggle with..

The GX 550 is expensive and I don't need an SUV are my thoughts. It's nice, but not something I need.

I thought I read something about at least one engine failure in the 550, I don't know if that's been confirmed. One potential failure isn't a big deal, but I would stay up to date with any info regarding the 550 if you are interested in buying one.

I just think they look nice. Would love to get one but like you mentioned, I'm hesitant on the new powertrain. For that reason I'm leaning more towards the 460. More tried and true reliable with the V8, plus a used 460 probably won't hurt the wallet as much.

Sounds like you could use the extra space as well

With 3 kids I would at the very least check out the sequoia for a size comparison
there is noticeable size difference between the 460 and sequoia in terms of 2nd and 3rd row seating space

I think the 460 feels much more like my tacoma in terms of cabin space
but I only have 1 kid and we threw a deposit down on a 460 over the weekend

the GX 470/ 460 are great off road choices as well and many of them have no abuse off-road, my friend recently picked up a mint low mileage, GX recently with a binder full of local receipts from the dealership for all the services. fits his 2 boys and dogs well. I've been thinking similarly the thing with the GX series is they "run" Premium, but get V8 fuel mileage, but coming from a Tacoma its about the same. but can be had often cheaper then a 4runner.

I like the idea of a full size, and I've driven my mother in laws Yukon a few times. I just feel like it's a little too big? As far as driving and maneuvering in smaller spaces goes, I prefer having a smaller vehicle.
We're smaller folks my family and I. I'm the tallest at 5'9" and I can deal with not having the space of a full size.
My Tacoma has been sufficient so far... Until we're all packed in for 800 mi road trip.

Random stuff. Oh! and converted to non ADD 4x4.
If you need a truck, tundra it is. If you need an suv, then sequoia it is.

I'm sure the 550 is nice and there is some aftermarket support which I'm sure will grow over time. The 460 has more AM support, and it will probably be easier on the wallet to offroad along with anything else cost wise.

As a prior GX(older) owner I would go AWD Sequoia unless you want to off-road it

GX are great vehicles. I owned a gx470 and have driven a few gx460s. If you don't need the space of a sequoia, the GX is the way to go. It's much more nimble and quicker than a sequoia, weighs less. I currently own an LX470. My LX is much heavier and less nimble than the GX was.

and if i remember even the base model GX had locking diffs, and butt warmers. which in my 40's feel really nice when you're out on a trail driving around

Good stuff here guys. I'm definitely drawn towards Lexus for the creature comforts and premium feel as well as off road prowess. Definitely will be looking into it more and paying attention to the 550 vs the 460 and weighing the pros and cons.

the new GX550 is super killer. you can get some goo deals on 460 though. I have been meaning to source an older 470 myself. If you plan to use it for any offroad almost everyone end up removing the 3rd row of the GX. Will come down to what you want to get out of it. The newer models like the 550 are great but pricy. If you plan to mod them let me know we have been working on getting some new GX setup.

Def agree but already you can pretty much kit out a GX550 shocks, uca, torsion bars, trailing arms, lower arms, extended travel, regular travel you name it. The AM side of things have really jumped on the new LC and GX and every month more and more are adding support but you can get a pretty tricked out setup already.

Have 3 kids also. Wife and I are the same height, 5’11’’. Kids are 3, 6, and 9. We just simply outgrew the 460. It is now my primary vehicle. My wife drives the family bus (Chevy suburban). The GX is just for short trips/around town. Suburban is for long trips. New sequoia on test drive fit us well but wife wanted more cargo for weekly Costco runs. Having all 3 kids on same row while on long trips is exhausting. The GX is still way more comfortable than the taco. Still use the taco for taking out trash, off road trips and getting things from hardware store. It feels way too cramped with 3 kids.

I have a 470 but just one child - I removed the third row seating for the cargo space. Unless you hate them I wouldn’t have anyone but a smaller child sit in the third row anyway it’s not comfortable, there’s very little legroom. I do love the 470 though. I’m just under 200K and currently redoing the suspension, brakes, timing, bearings etc. Mine is navigation and not having an easy upgrade to CarPlay is really my biggest gripe.
