Just a little historical perspective to help you on your way. Pop that pic in Google lens for alternative ideas. :D

I haven't taken possession of my truck yet. I've put a deposit down on a DirtBox Overland camper canopy. Not the cheapest, but probably the best. My current rig is a 1985 4Runner with a roof tent. That truck has been all over the place (500k miles) and served me well. On a trip to the Yukon in 2021 I really needed more room to get out of the elements. The front seat wasn't working for me. At one of the campgrounds was a fella with a Gen3 long bed Tacoma and a Four Wheel Camper. That was the ticket.

I decided to compromise and go with the camper canopy instead. I wanted to keep the weight down, as well as the size.

I looked at several companies when I was at Overland Expo last summer. My choice was narrowed down to Dirtbox, and Lone Peak. Dirtbox is in Colorado. Lone Peak is in Washington. I live in New Mexico. Dirt Box it was.

That is one great looking trailer you have there. Did you design it yourself or did you follow some plans you found somewhere?

If only Instagram had existed the, this is pure chum stank for trad wife, overlanding, and van life people. Phyllis and Clarence could be telling people to "smash that like button for more great content" instead of working a 9-5.

Its a great pic, in all seriousness. Car camping doesn't need to be fancy to be successful.

I went from a 2021 6 foot bed to the short bed.
I liked the 6 foot bed for accommodating a 6 foot cot without having to assemble or dissemble.
So now I am thinking about a truck tent that fits over a cap.
    Like this one...

But the rear canopy also attracts me since much of my camping (sleeping) is in fair but sometimes rainy weather.
That extension provides much of that functionality.
Do you have a link to your specific choice of Hasika canopy that fits on your cap?

    This one?

There are a couple of conflicting pictures. One shows two poles on the end like yours, the other a single pole at the back (of a Jeep). Which is it? Certainly some mixed reviews about its ability to stay together in breezy or windy conditions. Do you have experience with these conditions? Like I said. Rainy and stormy can be typical when I camp.

This is the Hasika that I purchased off Amazon. Amazon.com: Versatility Camping Tent for Truck Bed,SUV RVing, Van,Trailer and Overlanding Portable Teardrop Awning Canopy Tear Resistant Tarp with 2 Sandbag : Automotive
I've been happy with it. I use the two pole setup. Suction cups on the side windows hold it in place. I also secure the guy rope to the tire rim.
If it starts raining (or gets windy) you can lower the poles so that the awning won't catch some rain or wind.
If you do cold weather camping in the short bet the full-size truck tent you referenced might be better. It's an awning rather than a tent that you can close up.
    Cheers!

It seems like I could do both the tent and the awning. At the same time.
    Thanks for the information.
