Run the numbers for yourself, but the Tacoma doesn't shine in the payload and towing capacity department. It can tow small, so it really depends on what size you're looking at.

If you want to tow keep the Tundra. Seriously.

Personally just picked up a Winnebago Hike 171DB a couple months ago. It's 3400lbs dry, 400lb tongue weight (dry), and has a max capacity of about 4200lbs. My taco tows it no problem, even doing 70mph (i know i know) up hill. Sure I have to drop a gear here and there but it pulls pretty well. My truck is completely stock so no roof racks or anything of that nature, but even with extra equipment this trailer is still well within the vehicles limits and leaves a lot of room for other stuff in the truck. Due to the low GVWR you can only pack so much, so you need to be efficient with the equipment you use. However, that's no different than if you were trying to build an overlanding truck.. Lightweight gear is key no matter what you do with a taco.

For breakdown, the trailer is 21ft long and has 15 inches of clearance with a Dexter torsion axle which is perfect for some trail hunting and is perfectly capable of going to a lot of places the typical overlander roof top tent would go. Obviously you can't hit the tough stuff, rock crawling and all that, but it will get you a lot further and off grid than a standard teardrop trailer. It has a cool exoskeleton that you can mount stuff to that also looks to act as added strength for the cabin. Did I mention it has a full bathroom, full size bed, full dinette/seating area and a slide-out mini kitchen?

Clearly i should try to sell these things. But reality is I just really like my trailer. Haha.

EDIT: Here's the only shot I have for now!

As someone who has had both trucks I feel like most people that plan on towing with their truck and have very little experience towing would be WAY better served by the Tundra platform. I myself want a smaller chassis thats better suited off-road and I have the towing experience to stay within the limits of the truck so I decided to "build up" a Taco to do what I want.

Dragged this up and down the 405 fwy at the Getty center and the 101fwy. Knowing I had to climb these hills had me nervous at first. The truck handled it like a pro. 21ft 3600lbs dry, we estimated about 4500lbs once loaded for a 5 day trip.

Finally pulled the trailer into the driveway from it sitting all winter . Swapped out my Jack for a power Jack . Washed the camper . Going to drive around the block then check all my lug nuts . No squat to the Tacoma  sits near level ,both camper and truck . WD hitch .

Not sure. Is it a travel trailer? I know this much - it’ll get me where I want to go and makes the stay comfortable. The Taco pulls it easy.

Ever wake up to the sound of a herd of deer grazing just below your bed? Amazing.

... Ever wake up to the sound of bison sniffing at the same window? Pants-shitting. :cookiemonster:

Keep the Tundra. The Tacoma is a “best case scenario” tower. It will do decent, but throw in a variable or two, and it is a miserable experience.
