I’m really interested in these campers. There’s not much on the internet from Tacoma owners. I know you’re out there. Show me your Radica Moonlander and diy setups!

    Hey Lumpy Waters,
I just got my build date from Luke at Radica. Looking like the first week of Aug. 2024. I have a couple questions for you about yours Moonlander if you don't mind. I still have time to make changes on my build.
    1) Really worried about the "Standard Slim Pods" side extenders. That is what I would like to go with, it is supposed to provide 73" of sleeping length from side to side. I am 5'10" so I should have enough room to stretch out, with an inch or two to share. Is yours the standard slim model or do you have the extended version? I think the extend version brings the sleeping length out to 76"? Any thoughts?
    2) Have you had any issues or anything I should be checking before I leave the shop after the install?

Other than that, I went with only a couple of options, 2 sliding side windows, solar panel install and the max air fan

Cheers! I will be posting pictures when I pick up.

PS - between my previous F-150 and this current 2018 Tacoma, I have had about 3 versions of some sort of truck camper. I do have lots of truck camping stuff that I should be able to use in the moonlander. This is shaping up to be the best and most flexible camper so far.

It sounds like Radica have really ramped up their production capabilities! I had ordered mine in November '23 with an estimated completion date of June, which got pushed up to April. As to your questions:

    1. I have the extended sides. I'm 5'7" and can stretch out comfortably on a 25"x72" Exped mattress. While I would probably be fine with the slim side option, I like having and use the extra length for stashing clothes and an extra blanket. I have a small dog that sleeps with me so I think that it helps with that. Even though they are slanted, the extend side panels are wide enough to be useful for incidental storage, for instance I can prop a small power station there, and I have some build-in mod projects in the works that wouldn't work as well the slim side option. I debated for a long time extended vs slim but am glad I went with extended. My only hang up is that I worry about the extended sides being more prone to getting damaged in parking lots. So far, nothing has happened. I try to park in areas that are less congested or only have a parking slot on one side, which usually allows me to park farther away the adjacent vehicle.

At your height, whether or not the slim side option is comfortable for you might depend on the width you choose for the bed. With a wider bed, you can sleep diagonally. I have a Runway squaredrop camper with a bed that is only 70" long and I cant fully stretch out for the length of it but since it is 46" wide, I can comfortably sleep diagonally.

    2. The only issues I've had are extremely minor and barely worth mentioning. One is that two of the cable anchors for the solar panel wiring on the ceiling came loose. It was delivered that way but I didn't make an issue of it as I had to get on the road. The other is that while documentation for the Maxxair fan was provided, there was none for the solar panel. There are specs for the solar panel that would be useful to know. I'm sure I can get this from Radica if I decide I really need it.

Lumpy Waters, Thanks for responding to my questions. Food for thought. Yeah, parking lots and forest service roads are also a concern. Although, since it is a Tacoma that does give me more clearance than if I was driving a full size truck. I have that same size Exped mattress, 4" thick, it is very comfy.

I am pretty excited. My build week is Aug 5th. Not sure if I pick it up that week or the next week?

Also, not sure if you heard but Luke is introducing a new "Honeycomb, composite top" 1.25" thick, smoother than the diamond tread top, but as strong or stronger than the previous aluminum version. Says no insulation needed with this new roof composite material.
Here is a link that Luke did about the new roof material. there is a you tube on it as well if this link does not work- https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hVeIKZ9Y00K82Ah1HwEIgnaWhscIr6i4/view
