Leitner Designs Active Cargo System

Anyone have any experience with or opinions about these? I'd eventually want to mount an iKamper skycamp on it.

At that price I'd be inclined to spend a few hundred more and get a camper shell that can support the RTT. Security and waterproof; two things that rack doesn't offer.

 

Yeah, the price is definitely steap lol I'm just not a fan of hardtops though. If I was going to fork out more cash I'd probably just upgrade to a pop up camper instead.

 

Here's my "review" on it. Hand down best bed rack on the market, but also the most expensive. If you can swing it in your budget you will not be disappointed

Don't know about the quality but the design is awesome.

 

I just put one on my truck coupled with their bed stiffeners. Quality IMO is tough to match. This thing is SOLID! You do lose functionality of OEM bed rails, but gain an inner and outer rail system, plus load bars. The only thing I wish is that the load bars were same height as my Prinsu rack.

 

Are they lower?

 

A bit higher. I haven't measured the difference yet, but I've thought about seeing if I can replace the spacers on the roof rack to level it out. I'll snap some pics this afternoon.

 

$1600 for 30 feet of powder coated aluminum pipe with mounting tabs??

$500 seems more realistic.

 

you clearly haven't done much manufacturing. the aluminum alone is probably close to $500.

 

Maybe if you live in the UK, or somewhere else with hefty import fees. I just bought 20' of 6061 for $200 + tax. No quantity discount.

20 hours +/-, some plate, some argon, some sticks, a huge-ass oven to bake the powder-coat, and a bag of 8-8 bolts/t-nuts, you can own that for $350-$400.

I'll admit the oven would add a lot, but aluminum does fine bare.

 

As promised, here are the pics. Fortunately, it's more than just bent aluminum pipes. I did shoot one down the top of my roof rack to show the height difference. It's not a ton, but it's noticeable.

As far as price, yeah not for everyone, but it suits my needs.

 

I'm sure if you're good with a welder, metal brake, and flowjet/cnc you would certainly be a leg up on having one of these for less than they charge, but the same can be said about nearly every part. Unfortunately for me, I don't have any of those tools. I'm pretty good with a hammer, vice, saw, and grinding wheel though. Lol

I underestimated the cost of my bed rack. Amazing how fast the hours add up when you are figuring things out as you go.

 

The wielding looks “Spot on”. Nice technique.

 

You're obviously not accounting for the ~20 hours in your math, or you think your time is work next to nothing.

 

You don't "get" hobbies. Sad.

If it involved programming or electronics design, I'd call it work.

 

I do understand hobbies, but hobbies don't nessessarily save money, you do them for enjoyment, not cost savings.

 

Great rack, being able to move, and or remove the rear cross bar is a plus. I used the side extrusions as a starting point for my spare tire mount as well as other things.
