I got a prinsu top rack (5') for my Leer 100XR (which I've only had for less than a week). I just tried mounting it today, to find that either the cross bars on the prinsu rack are too short, or that the factory tracks on the shell are too far apart.

I also noticed that the factory tracks are facing downwards, and they look like they might even be backwards. The picture shown below makes me thing the tracks should be flat, whereas in the second picture, you can see that mine are angled down/out.

    Mine:
    PXL_20201107_201146040.MP.jpg

Looks to me like the tracks are in backwards...

Possibly due to this, I cannot get the rack to mount at all, since it's not wide enough. Here's some more examples:
    PXL_20201107_200544854.MP.jpg
    PXL_20201107_200246071.MP.jpg

Has anyone ran into this issue?

I did take one of the tracks off and reverse it so it laid flat, however it didn't look like that was going to give me the extra length needed if I did it to both sides, so I just put it back how it came.

    Any help would be great!

    --------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT 11/15/20: The cause of this problem is that for some Leer shells, the tracks are too far apart. The solution two fold. First, I did have to flip the tracks so they would be level. Some companies (such as Sherpa) make mounts that fit the curved tracks and still make the rack level, however for my rack I wanted/needed them to be flat. The solution for this is https://prinsudesignstudio.com/product/leer-mounting-feet-2/. These basically bring the tracks in a few inches so you can attach the rack to them.

I also reached out to Prinsu and basically told them they need to let people know if this issue when buying the rack, so they don't have to purchase the mounting feet as they're trying to assemble their rack and wait extra time. They told me they would add an option to their website to let people know or potentially order the feet at the same time, so hopefully that happens.

Here's the result of all this:

Hmm, following. I'm thinking of running the exact setup with a Leer and that rack.

Take a picture of the inside. Might be that wide to avoid the honeycomb section. Almost had the same issue but ended up putting them closer together and going through the honeycomb

Looks like whoever installed the rack on the shell (not sure if it's Leer or the dealer who actually does it) put them on backwards. I'll be flipping them tomorrow and seeing if that gives me any more space and I'll update this thread.

I will post an update tomorrow after I've flipped the rack rails to be the right way, since they're definitely backwards.

Many thanks for the Sherpa refferal.

    Ordered them tonight!

After flipping the tracks, this is the result. TL;DR: The factory tracks are still too wide, however it's much more close now. I'll be talking with the dealer tomorrow to see if this is the standard width or if mine are wider for some stupid reason.

Damn man that sucks. Makes me wonder if I should just pick up a local shell I found without the tracks, and just add them myself.

Keep up posted bc that’s the exact same setup I’m looking to get.

Will do. Making a trip to the dealer tomorrow and I'll update with what they say about it. I looked at the rack description (https://prinsudesignstudio.com/product/t2t3-prinsu-toprac/) and it says this specifically:

The Tacoma Toprac is a modular, adjustable, and completely bolt together roof rack for fiberglass toppers such as Leer, A.R.E, and Snugtop that are equipped with Thule/Yakima tracks. Options are available to bolt racks directly to the topper but are not the preferred method. Models are available for both the short and long bed Tacoma models.
Since it says they should just bolt in, that leads me to believe that the racks were installed wrong from the factory.

I was doing research and saw these earlier on the Prinsu site.

Yeah, another user in this thread linked those too. I'm contemplating getting them, but wanted to check with the dealer first.

I'm also not a big fan that those only have two bolt holes, whereas the ones that come with the rack have four bolt holes. However they do look like they're fairly strong, so maybe they're okay.

I don’t blame you, I’d check with them first as well.

If you get a chance would you please measure how wide the tracks are on the top?

Im headed to the dealer Saturday to go over what I want for the shell, and will probably have questions for them about it.

    Thanks

You bet. I'd hate to have someone else go through this haha.

Thanks I appreciate it. I just didn’t want to drop $3k on a shell just to be in the same boat. Especially when I can just buy a used one and add tracks for less.

For sure. The one argument that I've heard is that if you buy new and get the tracks installed from leer, then you're fine with the warranty. However if you add them yourself then it voids the warranty. I never looked into whether or not that was true, but I guess if you bought used you wouldn't expect a warranty anyways.

That’s what I’ve heard too. The only thing stopping me from buying the used one is it doesn’t have the tracks , and only has the slider windows.

Don’t get me wrong I could live with it, but I really want the windoors on both sides.

Windoors are definitely worth it. Even trying to do this project, the screws holding the tracks down (that I had to reverse) had the nut on the roof of the shell, and I was able to just have one hand hold the nut and the other unscrew it. Without the windoors I would definitely have to have someone else help, which is super inconvenient.

It's also saved me countless other times (and I've literally had the shell for less than a week) from having to climb in the back to reach things that might have moved while driving.

You might be able to do this with just the sliding doors depending on whether they have a screen or not, but the windoors are 500% worth it.
