Bought my LEER 100XR used just a couple days ago for $1000 on craigslist. Had it repainted for another $850 at a local body shop. Still a deal in my opinion given I was quoted around $2600-2800 with a 4-6 month lead time for a new one.

As expensive as it is, I’m still very happy with my purchase.

Thanks the color is perfect had it custom mixed was like $80 for a quart. I just wish the finish came out better, only my third time using a real gun. It’s got a lot of stuff in the clear and has the usual runs and some texture blushing in spots but eventually I’m going to try to wet sand and buff it out and see if it makes it better. Just worried about making it worse, not much experience in body work just wrenching.

$2,000 +- $500 is a fair price to pay IMO.

Closing in on $4,000 and you’d better have a legitimate NEED for a topper. Unpopular opinion, but you money slinging goobers paying those prices are what’s allowing them to set the bar the high. Maybe I’m just cheap though.

Found a Extang hard-trifold today for $150, in great shape, so rocking it until I find a fair deal on a used cap.

Supply and demand, also willing people to pay the price. I guess that’s the free market at work. I agree with spending that kind of money there should be a good reason. I went from driving diesels with 4 doors and king beds to a Tacoma. I needed the extra secured space in the bed. I searched long and hard for a used cap but none that I could find that fit and wouldn’t make sense to re paint. The $3,800 was more than I wanted to pay…unfortunately I’m one of them money slinging goobers at the moment!

You aren't gonna find a new topper in the $2000ish price range unless you can get Doc Brown to give you a ride in the DeLorean. The cost of materials, labor, and all the shortages are what’s driving up the cost of everything (among other things beyond our control). I’d love to pay 2 years ago prices for stuff now too, but it aint happening. But I don’t think it makes people money slinging goobers to buy what they need or even want these days, we all have to either pay up or go without. If people just decided to not pay the prices they charge for toppers, they aren’t going to lower the prices in the current situation we’re in, they’ll just stop making toppers and close up shop.

Buying what one only wants, at double what it cost two years ago, is a poor financial decision. I didn’t say what one needs, obviously that has different drivers.

Sure, plenty of us can afford to make less than perfect financial decisions, but it doesn’t change the reality that prices nearly doubling in two years isn’t an actual “ehh what ya gonna do” economic situation we have to accept with a “meh” attitude.

Either way, it’s just my opinion. I’m opting not to spend twice as much on something that should’ve only gone up ~15% or so. That seems to be where we differ; we both accept prices have gone up for reasons, you’re ok with double, I’m not ok with double as justified.

I’m no ok with paying double, and I didn’t pay double for my shell. My point was, the prices aren’t going back down and it doesn’t matter how you feel about it. If you want a brand new Leer, Snugtop, ARE, etc.. and only willing to spend $2000, you’re SOL. And there are only so many used ones out there (and the used prices have soared right up to what new ones were just a year or 2 ago).

Those new prices are getting real close to what an Alu-Cab Explorer Canopy set me back in late 2020. I had a fiberglass topper on the last truck and having M8 nut slots all over the interior to mount as well as the weight savings makes me very happy with the Alu-Cab.

Looking at this thread makes me really happy I bought my RSI EVOa back in November. They really are comparable in price to the Fiberglass shells at this point.

So i just saw that and a brand new one is only 2900 plus install. So I think he’s a little steep. I found a dealer in Oklahoma that is willing to eat cost on fuel by manufacturer because he said there’s been 3 increase in the last 9 months or so. The last increase was 18% and this one is only 8%. I got the following prices. To be fair the one you listed would be alright but I’d still have to paint it, I’d lose the warranty and still need to travel to get it.

So found out today that the 100r is the cheaper model with main difference being the rear window frameless on XR with one handle in the middle. So base price is 2900 for carpet and no windoor sliders. 3100 with windoors and removeable/slider front window, carpet head liner and keyless entry. 3400 for install and labor I added the roof track and I’m at 3600 installed about 3-4 month lead time. Adventure Out in Oklahoma has been by far one of the nicest and easiest to work with. He said 500 deposit and then pay for it when it comes in. I know a lot of people don’t see a need for one, but having a dog and leather in a brand new truck, I really don’t want him riding inside with me. And grabbing my old vehicle every time I wanna take him to the park or with me is a PIA. I may not have the most need but do plan on camping more, pulling a 21 ft bass boat it would be nice to lock stuff up inside the cap and the fact that I’ve always wanted one even back in my mini trucking days when I was doing air suspension. I believe the 3600 is well worth it but still open to finding one for a good deal if someone is wanting to part with theirs.

Makes sense to me! I recently paid an arm and a leg for a new customized cap from ARE. I haven’t gotten it yet but I’m very excited.

I commented on it to see if he was willing to work with me. Looking at the map he’s about 10 hour drive one way from me. I just drove the truck back from St. Louis Missouri 10 hours. Would’ve been easy to swing through on my way back, but at 2500 plus 20 hour drive round trip that’s at least 4 tanks of gas, plus food, I could sleep in the truck but then still need it painted. I could live with out the windoors I think, I almost don’t want them but thinking Ill regret it later Ill go ahead with them. I wish I could find a deal like some of y’all who were in the right place at the right time. I’m waiting for a response from the dealer still but probably gonna go ahead and put the money down. Hell I would love an RSI or the other brand I can’t think of that has the pop up built into it that goes over the roof a little bit. But 4500-5500 is a little more than I’m comfortable with right now.

That all definitely makes sense. The way I see it, I wanted to get it customized exactly how I wanted it and the dealer I went through has a lifetime warranty on the paint and most of the major parts. So for me it was worth the money.

The Alu-Cab would be $3299 + $200 shipping (assuming that shipping is the same as it was in 2020). That is without load bars but the track system is integrated.

I've been on the fence for a while now between my next vehicle being a Tacoma or a 4Runner and the Tacoma was always a bit in the lead mostly due to price. Now they're nearly equal with the price of a cap added in (which is a want for me). It's making my decision easier to just go with the 4Runner. Same thing about stomaching the current prices, I've been quoted anywhere between $3600-4500 for the XR (Canadian).
