So i got tired of the little yellow/red faded stickers on the door locks and had an idea to put plexie glass in where the stickers and back light it with a LED. It turned out pretty good, and i never seen anyone do it so i figured id give it a crack. :D this is how it turned out...... what do you guys think?

So This will be the final result of all the hard work.

Edit: So I finally finshed the walk through, thanks for all the REPs and comments...... now get to moddin.:D

    Supplys:
    • Drimmle or Drill and bit
    • LED lights
    • Sand paper
    • plexie glass
    • Patience......haha
So start by taking the screws out of the door.

Unplug and pull out the controle panel.

After all thats done start pulling the door down by the speaker and keep following the bottom.

Now your gonna wanna pull of the black lock/handle unit so you can get the lock piece off.

Start by pulling the green and yellow cables of the unit so you can get it free.

You know need to get the lock piece out (dont mind the yellow cable that should be off by now) Theres a tab on each side so jut pry the lock piece in and push.

You should now have this little bad boy free and ready to be cut.

This is the side we will be drilling so the plexie glass can fit in.

Your gonna wanna drill out the side so the plexie glass can slide in. Try and drill extra on the side so theres no gaps seen from the front.

Now for the front, you can leave the sticker on or jerk it off, hahaha, either way its going bye bye.

Start drillin her...... It should now look rough like this.

Make a couple more soft passes, then take a razor to to to clean it up abit. After those have been done take a very fine grit sand paper to the back edge of the cut and clean it up (DO NOT TAKE IT TO THE FRONT, YOU WILL SCRATCH THE CRAP OUT OF IT.) it should look alot cleaner.:)

Now for the plexie glass, if you bought it clear your gonna wanna frost it buy snading down both sides with fine grit sand paper. should look like the corner in the bottom.

Cut the plexie glass bigger then the hole where the sticker was so you dont have a visable gap from the front.

Now for the lighting. i bought single LED lights from Pepboys for 7 bucks.

Now drill a hole in the plastic lock, right behind the plexie glass just big enough for the light to fit. glue the light and plexie in place with poxy or glue and this should be your final unit.[IMG]

    Off
    [IMG]

    On
    [IMG]

Now run the wire down the door and through the grommet to the cab fuse box.

Also bought this fuse splitter at the store, great buy..... :D wire it into that so the lights turn on and off with the ignition.

    Plug her in...

Reapply the door panel and screws.........

And BAM!!!!! Your done....... :bananadance: :yay:

Thats pretty clean not going to lie! Does it shut off when the doors lock? Id love to see a write-up on this. Would be cool if you had Blue on one side for unlocked and dremeled out another square and made it red for locked. Thatd be super clean!

Ya ill put and DIY on tomorrow, and they just turn on with the ignition (for now). Now im thinking maybe put a red bulb in with the blue so its red when locked and blue when not.

I noticed my truck doesn't automatically lock which is annoying...
My 1990 Z would auto lock after going over 10 mph...my moms '93 Lumina locks as soon as you put it in drive.

I always lock my 2009 Taco at a stoplight when I see a weirdo about to cross.

Really nice, I'll look forward to the install thread.

Do they stay on at all times when the ignition is on, or only when the doors are unlocked? The lights would be hidden when the door is locked, right? If the side of the lock with the light goes in when the door is locked, would the heat cause some damage? I know LEDs are not very hot, but I'm curious, does it get hot at all?

I would think that it would almost be more useful to have lights on the other side, to be able to find the lock in the dark when the doors are locked. Seems to always happen when I'm giving a ride to someone at night and they can't find their way out in the dark...

Congrats on a unique mod, it sure got me thinking!

You know, I can't remember!... Would the dome turn on upon hitting the unlock button or upon actually opening the door? Is the unlock button itself lighted?

I have been gone for work so much since I bought the truck this summer, I feel like we barely got to know each other... :pout: That's why I keep buying gifts for it on TW! :D

I'm thinkin red if unlocked and off when locked. Wouldn't really want it on all the time. Maybe use a lock symbol when lit up. Cool idea tho.
