I've read on here that some people use a larger oil filter in their truck and I couldn't find anything with the search on it so I have a few questions about it
What is the benefit of using a larger filter
    What kind do you use
How often do you change it

    Thank you for any help

larger oil filter IMO is only better for those running synthetic and want a longer interval change

if it makes you happy.......... it cant be that bad

The Mobil 1 M1-209 is probably what you're thinking, its a little taller and yeah, is good if you're running synthetic and would like a longer interval like knottyrope said. I've used it once or twice, and have heard of a handful of people on here who use it regularly, but I just use the Toyota filter cause it's great and I get it for a good price, and don't like to run long OCI's anyways, especially since I'm pulling a trailer for most of my miles.

I use factory filters -yzzd3. What it came with was a d1 iirc.

I have the Purolator One PL30001 filter in my truck, same size as the Fram PH8A. It just adds more oil to the system - never a bad thing, but this is the largest filter you can logistically fit on the truck. Instead of 5.7 qts, I put 6.5 qts. I was using full synthetic Mobil One Extended and changing oil at 10K intervals. Now, I'm using Mobil One High Mileage (non-Extended) and changing oil at 7K intervals.

Just because an oil filter is bigger, doesn't mean it has larger or better filtering capabilities. Some people on here are making claims based on assumptions and not fact. Which is very common with most people when it comes to maintinence beliefs. People tend to become more superstitious than logical.

Same diameter as stock, about 2 inches taller. Same filtration as stock, just more filter surface area.

Same price as stock filters, so why not?

Thank you everyone I'm definitely looking into doing longer interval oil changes and I wanted a filter that could go longer without being changed also

I change my oil (usually Mobil1 when I can catch it on sale at Costco) at recommended 5K service intervals and use Toyota filters.

I don't like a bigger filter on these trucks because the filter is inverted. Despite having an antidrainback valve, not all the oil stays in the filter when you turn the engine off, dry starts cause a little more wear over time. You can get a filter with a standpipe to negate the dry start issue, but I'm not sure it's really a concern on these engines... I mean the truck will rust out before the engine dies anyways. Lol
I'm not saying that running a larger filter will kill your engine, I'm just saying that it could potentially facilitate a little more wear over time. If you drive a lot of longer trips with fewer shutdowns and restarts a larger filter makes more sense for extending your OCI. I drive a lot of short trips where I start and stop the truck every couple miles, so I prefer a shorter OCI and a stock size filter. Just my $0.02.

I personaly will stick with the stock D3 filters as i always change my oil right around 5k. My one problem is that these different filters are setup with different specifications (as they are not designed for our motors) and things like pressure relief / bypass valve etc could be setup differently.

I use synthetic and still change my oil every 5000km. Going to switch over to the TRD oil filter...lol

The new Mobil One Extended Performance filters, with the green accents, and Fram Ultra are the only two I have seen that advertise protection up to 20K Most synthetic filters can easily go 10K, such as Wix XP; Purolator One (10K); Purolator Boss (15K), Bosch Distance Plus, etc.

However, driving style and conditions are a big determining factor, as are age and type of engine. If you are going into the 15K interval level, get your oil analyze to see how many contaminants the oil contains and how much additives remain in the oil.

Check out the oil analysis thread for more info/guidance.

The Fram XG3600 has the exact same specs as the XG3614. Look up the Fram website if you dare. Fram gets a bad rap but I've been using them for decades and have never had a problem. I do buy the XG though. I believe they're a little better than the base cheap ones. It has the silicone anti drain back valve.

2x the cost for the fram XG compared to a toyota D3 filter.... and the D3 probably has more filtering media..... yup ill stick with the good stuff from toyota.

you have to make sure the by pass valve is the same, not because it fits, it works.

I'm running the M1 209 larger filter. How did you figure out the larger capacity?
