    Hi Tacos!
Just joining what feels like a secret club. Had to switch careers (and I ain't young) because Covid, and am finding myself in Roofing. As a salesman, I swapped out my VW Golf Alltrack, which I loved, for a 2012 Double Cab Silver Tacoma, which I really love! 120,000 miles? who cares. Hope to have this Taco for a long time, and probably pass it down to one of my kids. Anyhoo, I need to haul around extension ladders, and the Taco came with a nice, tri-fold Tonneau cover. I have been looking all around, incl. at previous threads, to see if anyone had found a ladder rack that is usable WITH a Tonneau cover...no luck, unless you want to spend thousands, which I do not. Any help would be appreciated.

I tried making a few racks but none looked "right" because of the clearance issue with the tonneau. I have a bike one that is a quick disconnect that works, but the over head rack (mine is for canoe) is a big bolt in. Good luck, hope you can find something.

I share the same dilemma. Went to a truck accessory shop and asked. There's a tonneau cover that is mounted between the bed rails (sorry I forget the name/brand). That leaves the bed rails available to attach a Thule Trac Rac system. The base runs the entire length of the bed rails and requires drilling through the bed rails (plastic and metal) and securing with bolts.

The guy said there's no rack that'll work with a Tonneau Cover as they both generally use the track system to mount.

I didn't want that, so I'm just going to use the Thule Trac One rack that mounts to the bed rails during the "non-snow" months (Apr-Nov). Then I'll throw my Tonneau Cover back on in winter.

There's probably people smarter than I that could possibly fabricate something that makes it work.

Where you located? I got one I’m trying to get off my truck as I have an RTT comping and it won’t work with it.

Both actually, the rack is what I want to get rid of, but I would be willing to let them go as a package.

    Hey all,
Thanks for your responses...I appreciate your input. I bought a Harbor Freight one that was for short or long bed pick-ups. We've transitioned from using the cheaper aluminum ones on our work trucks to these, so I have had to assemble a couple myself and thought it would be fine (although not my ideal choice if I'm totally honest. I love the look of the overlanding, muscular style, but I can't justify that kind of cost and none of them really go up high enough for the clearance I need with ladders).
Turns out the rack didn't work. My truck has a liner that prevents there from being enough for the "J bolt" to grab onto, and I didn't want to bolt right through the bed, which would still have to go through the rails that the tonneau cover was slotted through. No solution seemed ideal.
Luckily, my work is going to buy it from me, as we have a truck that needs this rack. I'll just throw in my labor for free.
Next up, I'm gonna try the Thule Xsporter. It's definitely more expensive but the height will work and is adjustable and it looks like it will connect using the same rails I already have in the bed.
    Wish me luck.

That rack won't work with Tonneau Cover.

hey looks good @Spare Parts. I like the Industrial style.
Turns out, after doing way more research that I didn't want to have to do, I discovered that the Thule doesn't actually work either. (you're right @Sig45) Yakima makes one called the Overhaul HD, which if you buy the additional bed track kit, will mount into the rails. It's more than I wanted to spend, but I think it'll be a really solid, and very cool-looking option.

No money, all went to truck...
I have searched for the same thing. Ladder rack with backflip cover (and not the lame looking bakflip one). I even offered to PayPal people money for figuring it out. So far no luck.

    Good evening,
I had the same problem when I added a trifold. I used the ADARAC Pro series, works great. There are extruded aluminum rails that you bolt to the bed, then vertical uprights bolt to the rails. The system works great for my kayaks.

IMG_20190716_135922 (2).jpg IMG_20200629_122600 (2).jpg Buy some KB Voodoo bed rack mounts and weld up a rack yourself (cost me less than $300 total for materials) or have one made for you.

    Works fine with my tonneau.

I don't know how to do 'links', but I made a thread on mine - July 16, 2019 under 3rd gen. tacomas. Think it was titled Homemade bedrack for use with tonneau cover or something.

Hey- appreciate all the responses guys! I got caught up with work and life, but I'm back here checkin' in.
I decided that none of the racks were gonna work with my tonneau cover, that is was going to have to be an either/or situation, and I HAD to have the rack for work, so the tonneau got folded-up, and the rack got installed. I wound up getting the Yakima Overhaul HD rack, bcz it worked with my bed liner and rails. With the $100 adapter kit, you can successfully mount it. Almost all the other racks I looked at were attached with C-clamps, and that won't work in my Taco.
Anyway, the install went ok, until I discovered that the cross bars/rails DID NOT come with the kit. Ugh. In for a penny, in for a pound (especially since the bases were already installed), I went up to REI (believe it or not, they had the best price- certainly no one else had a lower price) and picked up the cross bars.
I spent way more than I originally wanted to, but I really love the way it looks and how sturdy it is. I'm not gonna be trying to load up a Brontosaurus or anything so, I think it'll carry my ladders and lumber just fine.
    Cheers!IMG-1478.jpg

Your Overhaul HD will work with a retrax rolling/locking cover... once you buy the brackets from yakima. The tonneau has a rail system with t-slots on the bed rails that the rack fits into. It is a sweet setup, but expensive.

I would love to switch from my camper shell to that rack and tonneau setup.

Do you remember the name of the tonneau that works with the Thule Trac Rac?
