i just bought a camper shell for my '10 taco. i made them install a ladder roof rack on top. all they did was bolt it on the shell which was made of fiber glass. just wondering if this is safe and is that the proper way to install it? its my first time having a rack on a shell.

what kind of shell and what kind of rack? Is the rack on tracks that allow you to adjust the distance between the bars?

there's no tracks on the shell so they bolt it down instead. the ladder rack is actually designed for camper shells but i was just wondering if bolting it down on a fiber glass shell is safe?

I would imagine that it would be fine within limitations. a caone or some kayaks would be fine. would prob not load with much lumber.

thanks for the reply. i only put my surfboards. have you guys heard this type of practice before? i checked some websites that sell racks for camper shells and they pretty much do the same thing if there's no tracks. even the yakima tracks need to be bolted down on the shells. just a lil worried.....

my yakima's are bolted down to a track, that's bolted to the shell. I've got an ARE shell and I thought they gave a weight spec, but I can't find it now.

I have had toppers before and just ordered a new one for my 09 and going to bolt on eyelets on top so I can hoist it off with a lift on my garage celing. If they bolted it in the right place and used washers it should be fine.

Yeah, if you're worried about it just make sure there's some nice size washers between the nuts & bolts and the shell itself to distribute the load. And I'd avoid using it when it's real real cold (depending on where you live) because that shell's bound to get brittle in subzero temps. :)
