This noise just came up never made this noise before. Used a mechanics stethoscope and hard to tell if it’s a slight knock or something with the torque converter. I can hear noise from the bell housing but could be echoing from the motor. Could be torque converter? The noise is consent in park drive still the same

    unbolt the torque converter .
Once the converter is unbolted , carefully and slowly slide the converter towards the transmission pump . The converter will back away enough for you to run the engine to run your diagnostics . This eliminates everything in your drivetrain
The only thing turning when the truck is parked is the flywheel , the converter , transmission pump and the input shaft .
Transmissions and torque converters seldom ever ever knock . Noises enjoy travelling to the converter and bell housing mind you .
Another trick is running the engine with the serpentine belt off . This eliminates everything on the front of the engine
You would be surprised how many guys change out their torque converter and then find out the noise was coming from the alternator

Well I am usually a stethoscope so I can follow the noise. So it’s not blinding guessing

I’ve heard noises can come from the torque converter? Is that not a thing for Toyota’s?

Torrington bearings can make noise , impeller , stator and turbine blades can break off creating whines but zero knocking .
The transmission pump as it wears can whine when the bushings and the pump clearance gets too wide but they wont knock .
The only time you will get a knock is when you are installing the transmission and dont have the converter into the transmission pump far enough , The transmission will knock1 time as the pump gears crunch .
You will know that you did something wrong when you put the transmission in any gear and it doesnt move .
Ask me how I know this ?

What year model? Is it a 3.4L? It's been a while but a few of us have found bad wrist pins. I can't find the video on here where an owner recorded the sound of a bad wrist pin. The noise is deeper into the engine than valve problem.

If you don't find the noise to be in the transmission, check out the following thread.

2.7 it’s a jdm motor. Mine blew a head gasket and was burning oil so I swapped. I do have 90 days on this motor for warranty. Hoping it ain’t rod knock

Hope not also. I haven't seen the issue with a 2.7.

That’s why I’m really not sure what it could be. Sounds like it coming from the bell housing when using a stethoscope but could be echo.

only a few bolts to remove and you will know for sure . Disconnect battery , back the converter away from the flywheel and then start the engine .
Considering you have 90 days warranty , I would jump on the diagnostic quickly . Sometimes it takes a while for JDM to find you another motor .
Sad news if it is a wrist pin . I know how much work youve done to your beast

I know it’s hard to swallow. Would’ve went rebuild but can’t have a month no truck. So how far do I have to Push the converter back? And if anything how do I get it back to the flywheel once done. Also what happens if it isn’t far enough away from the torque converter?

How far to push converter back ? just enough so the flywheel and converter no longer contact . 1/4 inch is fine . Make sure the converter spins once you get the bolts out and your golden .

What happens if your converter is still in contact with the flywheel and you start the truck . ? I dunno , i have never tried that but i imagine the converter would turn . On the Dampner side of the converter there is a pilot . The pilot fits into the rear of the crankshaft and acts like an alignment pin for the transmission . You want to make sure the converter spins when you remove the bolts . Ive seen guys break many converter pilot stubs when installing transmissions and engines .

To put the converter back in place ,use a converter bolt .
Start the 1 converter bolt by a few threads . Then take a screwdriver and gently use that bolt to pull the converter back into the pilot hole in the crankshaft .
Once the converter is pulled back into place , bolt everything back up

I’ll try that just don’t understand how to get to back into place. I mean you start a bolt but what happens if it’s to far away:rofl:

The converter will not be pushed back so far that you wont be able to start 1 bolt . If memory serves me correctly , I believe your bolts are approx 5/8 in thread length and you are only going back 1/4 of an inch .
Every transmission install is done this way .

Will do. I’ll try that. Maybe a broken flex plate?

Flex plates can make that noise, but they also make a hell of a racket when starting.

You usually see them crack around the mounting bolts to the crank shaft on tacomas.

A broken flex plate ? probable but I doubt it after listening to your video . A broken flex plate changes in pitch as you load it up . More of a tinny sound .
As mentioned ....probable because I hate diagnosing sounds over a keyboard .

I suggest reading the fine print of your 90 day warranty though .
Find out what JDM wants to see before they give you another engine .
You may have to prove the engine is noisy
Some videos with date stamps should work
Show the converter disconnected , then remove the serpentine belt and do another video with everything removed .

The procedure to disconnect the converter is in that FSM manual I sent you when you had no spark .
