I’m on the fence about boots. Just took them off my RCD 5100s. Lots of moisture and junk trapped in there. A bit of oil as well. These shocks are no Kings. I think the best option is a guard instead of a boot

I searched and couldn’t find any answer myself. Seem like the majority out there is fine running without protection. I on the other hand ended up with rock/sand marks on brand new kings shaft. My kit that I purchase never came with a boot. I’m pretty upset cus it may have cause the right rear to leak which is the only one out of my whole set. The left rear is pretty protected from the axle. Need to figure out a way to make a cover just in case.

I had some left over rubber from my camper build (2.5”x3/8”) and repurposed it with two zip tie used in building hvac. Took it to Joshua tree/mammoth and it is holding up and working as plan. Just need to find a piece a little longer for full extension. It can only help since all oem has a boot.

I can’t remember which shock manufacturer it was that I spoke to but they don’t sell boots because they said it’s worse off for the shock as it traps all the dirt and moisture in there. If you’re concerned with stuff hitting the shaft, I would do what ejwan did with just a rubber guard there. Have you had an issue with shocks being damaged without the boots? Or is this precautionary?

I've got a sheet of Kydex (the heat-formable plastic sheet) and have plans to use it to create a protector for the passenger side shaft. It gets continually blasted/roosted with debris from the front tires and the shaft will eventually pit and take out the wiper and seals if it does.

Why not modify a boot to hang like a skirt? Open bottom. I did this on my rear 5100's. It protects but nothing collects inside....

Glad I found this thread. I need to get a guard on my passenger side rear shock asap. That one is taking a beating being in front of the axle.
I emailed Poly Performance. Talked to a guy named Kurt. He said that you need to have this shaft stop in order for those guards to work. (his pic attached below) Unfortunately the 25001-144A's Im running do not have that. But he was under the impression all new Kings would be coming with that standard.

I like that rubber idea. How 'stiff' is it?

Probably what I will end up doing. Seems like it might be a little bit better than the Kydex idea just in case it ever falls off the truck. I personally cant stand the boot / bellows design. Had that on my Bilsteins. Trapped so much shit in there.
