Hey, about to get King 2.5x14 reservoir shocks. Just wondering how long you guys wait till you rebuild them. 50k miles is around what I’ve been hearing but thought I’d try and get some more feedback. Thanks

If they leak, rebuild them, if they make squelching noises, rebuild them, if they lose nitrogen charge, rebuild them. Other than that you should enjoy em until you notice a decline in performance. For some that's as early as 10-15k for others it's 30-50k. It can be hard to tell sometimes when a rebuild is needed, lots of people have a hard time telling a shock is past the point of needing a rebuild.

If you plan on rebuilding them yourself (which I highly recommend), this can be done for around 55.00 each.

Kings are stupid easy to rebuild.

Depending on use, once a year for this guy or every other year. I check N2 pressures often.

I'm on a yearly schedule lately as well. Do you use your nitro rig to check pressures?

BTW OP, you must check N2 pressure with the shaft fully extended.

Yes I do. On longer trips we all take specific tools and supplies. This is one I bring. Rebuilt a few shocks at night off a trailer deck.

Thank you! And thanks for the quick response! I’ll keep that mind!

I’ve looked at a few really in depth videos and it does look pretty easy to do yourself. Also don’t want to have to get another set of 12-14” shocks while they’re being rebuilt. Also since I’ll have a relocation kit ofc.

What psi do you have yours set at and what kind of difference does give or take 50psi make?

I run my Kings at the recommended 150psi. Extra nitro shouldnt be used as a tuning tool really unless you have proof your shocks are cavitating (would take some really heavy valving and hard use to do that on mid travel Tacoma). Turning up the pressure acts like slightly thicker shims across the board but most noticably at slower shaft speeds. I don't think you'd notice a big change from 150-200psi but it might speed up wear on the sealing orings. My front sway a way coilovers run 200psi and last well enough from rebuild to rebuild.

Okay thanks I’ll plan on keeping them at 150psi. How long have you had your 80 series though?!
