After a recent theft in my building and noticing that most Tacomas in my neighborhood have steering clubs. I've decided to take some basic steps to try to prevent the theft of my 2003 Tacoma.
My truck doesn't seem to have a chip in the key so it might be easy to steal. (like honda easy)
While there are a few posts on here about fuel pump kill switches I want to go in a slightly different direction.

I just want to do a simple fuse bypass switch. Im thinking of pulling the ECU or IGN fuse then adding the switch with an inline fuse, So it cranks but wont start. Its essenitally the same thing as pulling the fuse everyday, without the inconvenience.
Has anyone else done this or something similar?
    IMG_0597.jpg

If the theif sticks around and looks under the dash and figures it out, so be it. I have insurance.
If your tacoma has been stolen and you learned something about how they did it, please chime in.

So I picked one of these up:
Blue Ox Fuse ByPass Switch for Towed Vehicles - ATM Mini-Fuse - 10" Long
    IMG_0596.jpg

    https://www.etrailer.com/Tow-Bar-Wi...CWpeODqHeFjNGKAQUTCgYc7v-rTVGm0waAvBQEALw_wcB

Yes, it is way overpriced, and yes I could make something similar for $10 from oreillys... But... I don't want my home solder job failing and killing my ECU at the worst possible time, like at 70mph.
I also want it to be easy for me to troubleshoot or put back to stock.

Also If you have good things to say about alarms or steering locks or other tricks let me know.

    Questions:
Which circuit should I tap into?
What's up with the 30A power fuse (Top Right)? Can you add a toggle switch there and kill all power?
Why do I have a 4WD fuse? WTF! hah
Can anyone see any major flaws in this mod?

    Thanks

There is a 10-12 guage wire from battery negative to frame ground nearby. When removed/disconnected the truck won't start, but other electrical functions will still work. FYI

Considered a Viper alarm myself, just for the added convenience of remote lock/unlock.

If a real thief wants your truck it is gone.

this will keep people looking for a ride from using your truck .

get the EWD for your truck decide just what you want to do always remember it can fail at anytime .

The more connections the more places for poor connections

Thank the Gods I live in a place the keys can stay in the truck

I put a switch in-line with the ECU signal on the circuit opening relay system. When the Relay does not receive the proper signal from the ECU, it doesn't pass 12vDC along to the fuel pump. Therefore the truck will turn over, but never start.

Would you show a picture of which wire this is? I'm wanting to do this to my 2001 5vz-fe prerunner. Any help would be appreciated. I like your low amperage approach very much. I just can't find a reliable source for wiring diagrams or I should be able to answer my own question. Thanks!!!

You can remove the EFI relay then find which of the contacts gets +12V when the key is turned on. That is the wire you want to interrupt with a switch since it is on the low-current side of the EFI relay. The EFI relay gives +12V to feed the fuel pump via the circuit opening relay. The green/white wire above gives the ground to the COR coil. In my 04 3RZ, the green/white wire is actually white/blue.

This is what I did while using this same lead to get a signal for 'key on' for my 2nd fuse box.

Best was when I pulled the truck outside on a cold morning below zero I decided to let it run and warm up forgot all about it for at least 3 or 4 hours.

Another time the overhead door got stuck in the up position that might have been open for months

Hey Bart, would you mind posting a picture of the wire you're talking about and it's location? Or point me in the right direction to find it.

For a more cave man approach I rerouted the fuel pump power wire from the main harness under the driver’s seat to go through the cab (it’s already in the cab for anyone going to argue it’s not safe to have a power wire in the cab) to a switch under the extra cab jumper seat and made a new hole right over the front of the gas tank in the cab. I still plan on doing the relay trigger wire switch to a stock button on the dash I don’t use so I can leave the power wire switch on during short periods of time when I’m going to be jumping in and out of the truck.

Another idea I think @BartMaster1234 gave me was to have one or two of these wired to receive power when the fuel pump power wire is switched off. One inside the cab and one outside would be perfect. You’d just have to weld a little lockable box and wire them in a way the thieves can’t see where the wires come out and then all around throughout the cab (maybe inside and out like a maze) so they couldn’t trace the wires.
