Also the kid sorta-kinda deserved to get hit by the car, but I'm curious what they were protesting...

The car should have stopped, but I don't blame him because he would have stepped out and they would have done nothing but thrown rocks at him. Drive away a short distance, and call the authorities to let them know what happened.
